2011 Overland - Check Engine light

Came on on the way home. No messages, no other indicators, and no real difference in the way it drives.

We'll see what happens when (if) I make it to the dealership in the AM.

Check to make sure your gas cap is on tight...happened to me on my last SUV a day or so after i pumped gas into it, tightened the cap and after a day or so of driving the light went away...could be that simple.

yep....its a emissions thing. You are fine to drive it unless the light starts blinking...then STOP asap.

Nope - it was a fouled plug and misfire on cyllinder 2. It ran really rough on the way home. Of course, it cleared after I pulled it into the service bay. I'm at 28,800 miles, so did the plug change and tune up. All flipping 16 plugs changed. $289.

Without exception, I use 89 octane. I do a mix of highway and in town driving, but definitely more in town than highway. Wondering if I need to occasionally throw a bottle or two of Techron in there after every oil change. I've also read that using 93 grade gas consistently will get you added detergents, etc. that are included in the high grade, but not in the lower grades. Thoughts?

Re: 2011 Overland - Check Engine light

In my experience, a modern car shouldn't be fouling plugs. Either they fibbed, or something else is wrong. The ignitions on these things are so hot that it will burn anything off the plug if everything is working properly.

Also, if you are enough of a car guy to post on a car forum, you probably really want to know what is wrong with your car when the MIL lights up. So get a code reader and satisfy that curiousity. They are not expensive ($50-80). Mine has saved me well over $3000 over the last 10 years in fixing little niggles like gas cap seals, vacuum hoses, and spark plug wires myself.

I've got one, but I didn't hook it up. Should have. I would bet that they cleared out the log (assuming one exists) at the same time. If something really was wrong that they lied about, it will pop up again.

Make sure the code reader you have is CAN compliant. I had to replace my reader about 4 years ago when I bought a 2007 car that uses the CAN bus just like our Jeeps. The old readers won't work ... of course.

Not to bring up an dead thread... My 2011 overland hemi just gave me the MIL light. I parked at a near by cafe and searched to find this thread. Hopefully it's just the gas cap. I have a full warranty do if anything happens I'll hopefully be covered. Ridiculous though I've only gone about 5.3k kms and it rides fine. I hope it's not a misfire. I also noticed my "Eco" light stopped coming on even when it's supposed to... Bah...

If anyone could shed some light. It is not flashing it's just lit up. The battery in the key was loose and I fixed that but doubt that would lead to any problems. My mds isn't working not sure how that plays into it. I did service it just before 5k km as the dealer asked me to come in to do an oil change at around 5k kms. Should I be worried or wait it out? I'll update when I get back to my wk2 and check te gas cap.

Weird... It's off now. Gas tank cap was already closed. I'll keep checking to see if it comes back on. I haven't driven it yet. I went to get my camera from my car and thought I'd check. Weird... Maybe it was just the computer hiccuping. I wonder if there is something wrong with the mds and only lights when running... Hmmm. Anyways will let u guys know when I head out of here and actually drive.

JP, you may want to confirm what oil your dealer used, if a different grade than spec, it can prevent MDS from engaging.
