Harmon Kardon Stereo Mode vs Surround Mode?

I was wondering if anyone is experiencing the following:

On the evic I go into system settings and change the audio mode to stereo (like the sound better) from the surround mode. After I turn the jeep off for a while and go back the mode is changed back to surround mode.

Does anyone know if this is just the default setting and there is no way to changed it so it always starts in stereo mode?

The reason I ask is I can't go in an change it while driving as the jeep has to be in park to access the system settings.

Has anyone had a chance to check this on their jeeps?

it 'sounds' strange that the audio settings are only accessible/changeable while parked and not on-the-go! 'stereo' sounds better than 'surround sound' sounds (no pun intended)

I haven't tried that yet, however I think I might. I agree... being in park to change that is pretty lame. So far, talk show radio (i listen to it on the way to the office) sounded a bit weird in surround mode. Audio (Jazz, Blues, Rock and other sound superb however.

Hello everyone,

I'm starting this old thread back up because I'm experiencing the same problem as kbench55 and when I searched I found his post which unfortunately never received an answer.

I have been listening to audiobooks 95% of the time since I bought my Vapor so the audio mode was never an issue but just this weekend I have started to listen to music mostly through my USB port and I definitely prefer the stereo setting.

I'm hoping that in the 2 years since kbench55 made his post someone has uncover the secret of making the stereo mode the default setting or at least a way to permanently keeping it in stereo until you change it back.

This is probably not a issue in the 2014's with the 8.4 system but hopefully someone with a 12 or 13 will have the answer.

Im almost positive you can change from stereo to surround on the fly using system settings, or by hitting the audio soft key.

You can in the 2014's. I was never able to do it in the 2012.

Re: Harmon Kardon Stereo Mode vs Surround Mode?

So here's how it works from what I understand:

Stereo mode: for the base models without the upgraded sound- utilizes the door speakers only making it a 2 channel system (easiest way to refer to it)

Surround mode: for the upgraded system with the 9 speakers found on the Overland and up- makes it a 7.1 system (again, easy way to refer to it)

The Jeep senses the amp and this is what determines which mode you are in. Disable the amp, you will only have stereo mode as an option. Why we prefer stereo mode... its what we are most used to hearing. Also, the sound stage is narrower as well and from the driver's position it sounds better.

Try sitting in the back and play a song you are very familiar with (your go to song lets say). Play it loud but not so loud you lose clarity and the bass drowns out the vocals. Start in the driver's seat and play it in surround and in stereo mode, now go to the rear center seat and do it again. Your ears should hear a difference in the sound stage that is more noticeable in the rear than the front.

Greetings,

In the surround mode of the HK system, the Logic 7 matrix surround sound is active. The time delays are factory set. For those who are into home theater setups, this is the same thing you will find on the hi end JBL equipment and the JBL Synthesis Home Theater setups. And in the car audio aftermarket world, it is in the JBL MS-8

Best for now.:)

First I would like to thank everyone who helped bring this old thread back to life. Kbench55 told me that he eventually got used to the surround sound and likes it, as for myself even though I had to have the HK system for what I hoped would be killer sound in my music I'm back to the audio books mostly :o

Still I am baffled by the fact that you would think that the primary source of car audio would be music and that the system would be setup to play music as it's default not surround sound which as has been mentioned is usually thought of in home theater. Add in the fact that in the 12 and 13 models to switch between the two you can't even use the head unit you have to go through system setup in the dash which requires you to be in park  and its a head scratch'er.

Greetings,

Years ago, a number of aftermarket manufactures and some car manufactures did produce surround systems DSP's that contain the dolby processing for video, the same as in home theater. In recent years, the majority of the industry including the auto manufactures have gone a way providing true codecs for video. Today, the only aftermarket processor that has the ability to run dolby pro logic & digital is the Alpine PXA-H800.

Best for now.:)

I also forget to say, in music, their are recordings that are mixed in dolby and have the channel steering in them. You do not need a matrix codec like the Logic 7 or any other one. For these recording, IMHO, I see no reason why an OEM system cannot have the codec that is was recorded in. This brings you back to the aftermarket world if you want the ability to play it.

Best for now.:)
