Catch Can

Seen a lot of information on catch cans for CRD diesels (other models).. anybody contemplating one for the CRD variant?

After doing oil research I am almost convinced it would be a good thing - might even assist the DPF in the exhaust. I've looked at lots online.
I'm at the end of my technical knowledge though, and not sure about dealer attitudes if there was an engine issue under warranty and a catch can was installed.
Having said all that if ever there was a candidate it would be our 3.0l diesel Patrol - it doest have one but has done 135,000k of reasonable work without issues - 100,000k towing a 2t van included. In fairness it has also been well looked after.
The Jeep will take over its duties and will get similar treatment.

Re: Catch Can

The catchcan takes the gasses from the motor internal lubrication system and put it in a catchcan, rather than recycling it back into the inlet manifold. The gasses are caused by Blowby that is exhaust pressure that has leaked past the pistons. We used to to it with older turbo cars, as they got excessive blowby due to increased boost. Blowby is a mixture of exhaust and oil vapor. The benefit of a catchcan is to stop oily exhaust from being put back through the motor and allows you to dispose of the oil in the catchcan. you can also measure the blowby by the amount of oil in the catchcan.
I am unsure why you would put one on a new CRD, as they should have less blowby, but then again I have no experience with modern diesels.

I know the latest Mitsubishi CRD's are being fitted by owners with these, and they are collecting lots of oil....

Theres a link on that issue
