Damaged Key Notice?

My wife went to go to work in the Jeep this morning. She had her key in her pocketbook. She opened the door & the car "recognized" her. She proceeded to put her foot on the brake & push the start button & the car wouldn't start.

She then pulled the start push button off, inserted the key manually & proceeded to try and start the vehicle manually, and a notice on the display read "Damaged Key".

She went back in the house, got my key, and that seemed to work fine.

Any idea what might be going on with her key?

Try replacing the battery before anything else. After that, try the dealership as there isn't much else you can do without proper programing.

I did a search and got a couple of different responses. One person had to get it reprogrammed, one had to get a whole new key.

Thanks guys. The car's not even a year old and I'm surprised the battery would need to be replaced that soon? On the other hand, I can't imagine why the other key would work perfectly if there was something more serious wrong. Kind of scary that you can be left literally "STRANDED" somewhere if you didn't have a second key handy!!

Ahh.....ain't technology great.

I've got to bring it in next week anyhow, so I guess I'll just have the Mrs. use my key until then, and bring her key with me for them to check.

I think Jeep should've had a better system when it comes to these keys. I know on a relatives Ford SUV with push button start that if something goes wrong then you can take the actual key out (like ours) and insert it in the center storage compartment to start the vehicle.

I had the dreaded KEY NOT RECOGNIZED wgen you put your foot on the brake--had to take it in and they ordered 2 new fobs and reprogramed and it is working fine now.

What about trying to remove the push knob, insert the key and try it the normal way?

Glad all is fixed. Considering that's the only thing we as consumers can do on our own it's worth a try which is why I mentioned it first.
