Long trip with a dog. What do you guys reccomend?

I will be moving cross country in a few months and was looking for some opinions and ideas. We have a medium-large doge about 50lbs. And we are planning on putting him behind the back seat for the trip. I have seen some bars that you can put up to keep him from getting over the back seat. What would you all recommend? I would be looking for something that is not permanent and I would not have to drill screw in.
Also would would you recommend for protection from the back from scratches, dog hair ect. I do have a cargo mat but I don't think that will be enough.
Thanks

My dog is spoiled and all she will do is sit there and wine and cry if I were to put bars up behind the seat. I fold both back seats down making it flat as possible and put her dog bed down and a huge blanket. After the trip I just vacuum out the hair, it's usually minimal with the blanket being down, what it doesn't get a pet brush and vacuum get. :D

Have you considered a crate (dog cage)?
That would give your Jeep the best protection from dog hair and scratches. It's also very safe for the dog. Once they're used to the routine, dogs are generally very happy to travel that way.

+1 and safer for your pup even you need to panic brake or other emergency situations.

I find it dangerous when I see other people have their dog ride up front especially when its a large dog and pass airbags are active

Should you have presidential aspirations, you need to think this one through very carefully.

My lab is close to 80 pounds, and her yellow fur gets in everywhere, and is tough to get out of carpeting once in.
If I don't much else to carry, I line the cargo area with an old sleeping bag, and try to get it over the backs of the rear seats too.
Failing that, I fold the rears down, and spread out two sleeping bags.
We do have a dog crate, but its huge, (wire mesh and larger than the rear of the jeep).

I never let her come forward, even though she wants too.
After about 20 minutes on the road, she settles down, and goes to sleep.
I usually preface every trip by telling her where we're going in a happy voice,
even if its to the vets. (my bad) :p

I have two dogs, a GSD and a Heinz 57 each about 80lbs, both ride in the cargo area behind the rear seat, but both have good manners and don't try to stage a breakout over the seats.

I use a Canvasback Liner, it's water, slobber, hair, and generally dog resistant. The only downside is that it's a little slippery for them, so I put a throw rug down for them.

If you dog is the enterprising type, I recommend any of the generic pet barriers typically found on e-bay, I have personally have two from a a previous GSD who rivaled Houdini in escape prowess. These type usually are just pressure fit using a wrench. A little black electrical tape to the expanding arms to silence noise from loose fit and your good to roll. Nothing permanent, easy to install and remove.

Good luck on you trip, and remember to put the QL in park mode for easy entrance exist for you dog, if so equipped!

Some of the ideas are good. I cannot fold down the back seat we have a child that will need to sit somewhere. We will be moving from GA to CA. so it will be a trip that will take several days.

You raise a good point (sorry, no pun intended) :D
Even in the PARK position, my Lab has trouble jumping up into the back of the Jeep.
I have seriously been considering buying or making some sort of lightweight ramp for her. (or putting her on a serious diet :p )

I thought I saw a net that blocks the rear seat specifically for pets somewhere.

We have a 100 lb GSD.....the Kurgo wander hammock is the answer....works great

They make some other things that you might like as well. Have taken "monster mutt" to NM twice with it. Going again this year. He likes it.
