730N RHR - Lost Nav - Diagnostic Help?

Lost navigation on 2011 Summit built in Feb '11 with 730N (RHR). Car has 20k miles without problems except losing satelite radio presets after switching driver memory.

Now: (1) blue tooth phone link continues to try, without success, to load phone book; (2) navigation says maps not on HDD - reload maps; (3) system info screen will not show total HDD capacity, capacity left, or capacity used - only shows dashed lines in all three boxes on screen.

My conclusion: HDD is mechanically defective now, or some part of software is locked up.

Does anyone know how I can diagnose this failure?

I don't have any experience with a good dealer, or know how to locate one even though I am willing to travel. I'm afraid of them doing a bad job of R & R the radio unit or not knowing how to analyze the problem. I thought the dealer service departments had a 5 star rating system, but have not been able to find dealers by ratings. I'm in the Albuquerque, NM area and we have two dealers, but they are not very confidence inspiring.

I think I can do an OK job of R & R the unit, but I'm not sure of how to remove the HDD once the unit is removed.

My ideal fix would be:
1) Accurately diagnose the HDD as the problem.
2) Remove audio unit myself.
3) Remove HDD from unit myself.
4) Purchase (even though car is on warranty) new HDD unit.
5) Have a computer shop transfer all data from old to new HDD.
6) Reinstall HDD and audio unit myself.
7) Ascertain that all is fixed and functions.
8) Update software/firmware myself (car probably has earliest version). I think I can follow good instructions.
9) Hopefully lost presets, or any other problems would be gone.

I would appreciate ANY help, or critique of my situation or my reasoning.

Thanks in advance.

The HDD is tied to the radio mother board (encryption key). It does you no good to try to save or transfer your data, it will get overwritten and you will have to start from scratch anyway. You probably will also need probes and board programming know how to reset the motherboard for the new HDD and load the boot code on the HDD if needed. It is unlikely that you could get a HDD rated for the auto environment anyway. Those you get retail won't handle the temperature extremes, let alone the vibration.

Your best bet probably is to have the radio replaced, or try a firmware update, the instructions are in another thread here. You can also try to do a radio reset via the engineering menu, the instructions are in a thread around here somewhere. You could pull and reset the radio fuse. But if you are having so much trouble there is probably something wrong in the radio, and not necessarily the HDD.

It is fairly straight forward to remove and replace a radio.

Thanks ColdCase:

You helped me a lot by eliminating some blind alleys. I think trying your suggestions in the following order may be the least troublesome:

1) Remove and reset radio fuse. I know where the fuse is and how to remove it, but am not sure what the reset process is. I will look for the thread here because I think I saw it in this section.

2) Reset radio unit to factory defaults from engineering menu. I also saw instructions for this here.

3) Attempt to update software version. I noticed that some had troubles and some did not, but I figure at this point I can't do any harm.

4) Replace the whole unit. I would like to do this myself, but need a dealer to provide the new unit under warranty. My experience is that they won't honor the warrantee unless they do the R & R. In that case, I need to figure out how to find a dealer I trust not to mar the dash leather, or break the internal clips, or leave out mounting screws. I may be able to remove the bezel myself and let the dealer R & R the unit.

Thanks for responding,
AbqVic

I just had my radio replaced due to loss of USB connectivity (USB sticks, iPhone, iPod, etc.) Also could no longer play music through bluetooth on iPhone, but calls still worked. Anyway the point of my story is that my dealer's service department blows, but any dealer should be able to replace the radio without you noticing it (as mine was). It's incredibly simple. I've pulled mine at least 6 times. If your dealer screws that up you should never go to them for anything else, ever...

Thanks for sharing swampass2. Going to the dealer may be what I end up having to do.

if you have trouble with the dealer about warranty or replace the unit, i can help you and generate a new hdd for your car.

Thanks *sox*:

I'm going to do the three software steps first, but if I need to R&R the radio unit I'd appreciate your help. However, I don't understand the nature of the help you could provide.

I see you're in Switzerland. Would you be able to drop ship me a new radio under my warranty? Would I then need to ship my old unit to Switzerland? Also, what do you mean by "generating a new hdd?" It seems to me the new radio would be ready to go?

Appreciate any explanations you are able to provide.

then you need only a new hdd!

when the hdd are good go with this step first.

you can not do 3 step.......we have only 1 update!

- make in the e-menu a factory restore
- after restart from the system install the 2.120 again.

when the update are finish close the car for 2 min. for shutt down the canbus.

Didn't mean to misslead you *sox*:

I have the symptoms described above that make me suspect hdd MAY be bad, but don't know yet. I plan to do what you suggested first because it is easier than jumping to the assumption that hardware is bad. Here are the three steps I plan to do (when the wife quits driving the car):

1) Reset radio by removing and replacing the fuse. I understand this would be like rebooting a computer.

2) Reset radio to factory specs through the "engineering screen" as you suggested. Maybe this would correct any troublesome settings.

3) Install latest firmware/software(?) 2.12 update. I have an earlier version as my car was built in February '11. I still need to locate this file to download it to my computer.

After these three software steps, then I will assume it is a hdd issue and go to the dealer for a new unit under warrantee.

If I'm missunderstanding anything please correct me.
