Attempted Break In

Well, someone tried and failed to break into the Jeep last night. They hit the window a few times with some tool (guessing a screw driver). They were able to smash a hole about the size of a silver dollar in the window. An Audi down the street wasn't so lucky. The typical glass all over the ground and window completely shattered. Is there something "special" about our glass. I'm very surprised it didn't shatter. Perhaps it's the tint that held it together better than I've experienced with other vehicles.

its laminated.......like a windshield. they literally have to PEEL it away.

hopefully the emergency people are ready for that too.

bad thing is I have seen more than one set of pics where the thief was frustrated by the windows and took it out on the doors and paint :(

Laminated...gotcha. Thanks.

I was concerned about them taking out their frustration but I think I lucked out. Damage is limited to window and trim around window.

How about the sunroof glass? Is it laminated as well? I had a break-in through the roof on a previous vehicle (Mountain Dew bottle through the sunroof). Now, I just don't leave anything lying in sight.

The little b*^&@s use an automatic center punch to break the windows.
Looks like this:

My buddy had the back window of his wifes SUV smashed with one.
Mostly by kids looking for something to grab and run.

Laminated glass will foil that.

At least the damage can be repaired so no left over effects will remain. Good to know that about the glass, sorry it was through your bad luck we now know this.

After closer examination I think this exactly what they used.

Well, that simply sucks. Sorry this happened, but I'm glad that this is all that occurred. The side glass windows are laminated, as I understand it, for the purpose of sound reduction. However, this also helps in bonding the glass fragments together after the window is broken.

You also mentioned tint--if you have an aftermarket tint film applied, that also helps. In fact, 3M and other companies manufacture window security films that help avoid break-ins and, to some degree, provide bomb blast protection. Generally they're thicker and tougher than what is used for general applications, but even the stuff used for vehicle window tinting offers some added protection.

So... to the OP...

Do you have an aftermarket tint on your windows, and if so, which one?
