2002 4.7 SE-All new ball joints/tie rods at 103K-Expected?

Short story. Brought my one owner 2002 GC SE 4.7 to my local repair shop for monthly specials. Decided on the short money oil change, trans flush which included all required change outs for the 4.7 and finally a cooling flush. Had recently noticed a noticeable front end "wobble" at 55 MPH+ and asked for resolution? Answer was all new ball joints and all new tie rods with resultant alighment. Front end work was in $1200 range and completed. My primary question is this? Is the typical life expentacy of these components around 100K? I do not off-road and recently replaced front tires 13K mile prior due to low pressure issues that was my fault by not testing on a period basis. The vehicle is in otherwise excellent shape which is why I decided to spring for the $$$. I notice similar vehicles with many more miles with fairly high $$$ asking prices. Should I have traded it or did I make the correct decision? Thanks for all inputs-positive and negative!

I'm not sure what is typical, but my 2000 WJ w/ 4.7, has 196K miles and the original ball joints and tie rods are still tight. Just lucky I guess.

Im at 170.000 Km now and found my ride quite instable and nervous and felt some play in the steering. Investigation revealed quite some play in the track bar bushings and a little in the tie rods. The ball joints feel good with no play at all. Just ordered a new track bar and tie rods via Rockauto.com

Mine had to be replaced at 170K. While the cost to replace all of mine was about half of what you paid, I would have done it even if it was $1,200 without even thinking of trading. Does she drive nice and tight again?

I had to do tie rods at 85k...but I did them myself and took it in for a $75 alignment afterwards. Most of that $1200 must have been labor because parts are not that expensive.

Re: 2002 4.7 SE-All new ball joints/tie rods at 103K-Expected?

Thanks for all of the inputs. The price breakdown is as follows;
Two upper ball joints 196.72
Two lower ball joints 258.92
Four tie rod ends 308.76
Parts total= $764.40
Remove and replace upper and lower ball joints 5 hours 384.30
Remove and replace tie rod ends 2 hours 153.72
Labor total= $538.02
Alignment was $79.95

For those who can do such work on their own, see how much you have saved. I will take the time to see what Rockauto would have charged for the parts as a point of comparison. Should be interesting. Thanks again.

Wow either they got you some really high end parts or they marked them up big time, most likely the latter. Problem is with the stock stuff only the front upper ball joints are greaseable, the rest are sealed for life, which means when the seal goes out they must be replaced, you can't grease them like many after market parts (which is what I put on at 130k). I just did tie rods, but it cost me $150 in parts and then $70 for an alignment.

Edit: I just checked with rockauto, 4 moog ball joints (2 front upper and 2 front lower) are $180 with shipping for me. About $30 -$40 is good like Tony paid for the rear upper ball joint.

Re: 2002 4.7 SE-All new ball joints/tie rods at 103K-Expected?

I purchased the items I replaced from Napa:
Right outer drag link end $45
Right outer tie rod end $45
Alignment $70
Rear upper control arm ball joint $33
Rear upper control arm $115.75
...just for reference. 2 hours to replace tie rod ends is good. It took me about that long to do the drag link end and tie rod ends...you had basically the same things. I could have sworn I did the left side too, I'll have to check tonight and actually crawl under there. Maybe my records are jacked.

Anybody have any vaseline? And to think that this is not a dealership and I have been a "loyal" customer for many years. No wonder that they offered a ten percent discount on the labor. Oh well. At 66 and counting, will not be much left for the wife and/or kids.

When I bought mine it made a horrid grinding noise when going near full lock during parking. Took it to the dealer and they said one ball joint is near full worn and the other isn't far behind. I had 29k on the clock. :o Cost me a fortune to fix and then it still done it.

Turned the dealer who done the 30k service before I bought it put ATF4+ in the front diff. Dealer after a mini fight changed all diffs and t-case with new fluids and req. additives.

100k is good going, unless my dealer was just ripping me off.

Question has been posed of the quality of the parts? Fair question for sure. The General Manager is due back from vacation next week and I will report back as to whether the parts are "High End-LOL on my end" or ??? He will "level" with me and the truth will be forthcoming. I might not want to hear, but "How do you ever know what and where to have the work done?". Surely a subject of discussion since we are on the end game if we do not do the work ourselves. Unfortunately, I am 66+ with disability issues without the facilities to perform the work myself. Such is life. Not a complaint.

You definitely got ripped off:mad: (i'm not going to beat around the bush). I have 97k on my jeep and just replaced all 4 ball joints with moog brand $95 a pair for the upper and $150 for the lower. I would go back and find out why it was so much and what brand they put on. By the way, its a good thing you have a jeep because if you were a chevy blazer owner you would be puting new ball joints on every 20k :D.
