07 5.7 Hemi Engine light on

Hi, new to the forum and Jeep. Long story short I picked up a 07 5.7 Hemi a few weeks ago and now today the Engine light came on. It's not flashing and when the car is in the on position from off, it's on along with the other lights, so according to the manual, its not a big problem - but what is it. Checked the gas cap. I am thinking maybe the fuel? Ive been using 86 oct.. it has 110,000 miles. I checked the engine and under, do not hear any rattles or anything strange. Shifting is fine and engine performance is fine too. HELP

Could be a number of things. I'd go to advance auto parts or autozone and get them to pull the code. They do it for free.

Or you could pull the codes yourself by doing the key dance. Insert key, turn it to the on position without starting the engine, off, on, off, on. Look at the EVIC and it will display a code or codes followed by "DONE". Then look up the codes here http://www.wkjeeps.com/trouble_codes.htm to decipher what the code(s) mean.

So I put it on "on" without starting the engine? ( is this when all the dash lights go on?) and check the EVIC ( the message display?)

Thanks again!

Yes you start with on, rotating through the cycles like described before but you have to do it relatively fast. As for your other question I personally use 89 octane but that's just me.

Practice practice practice lol & I've had a lot of practice. My first car was a 1985 Chrysler Laser XE when I was 16 and they didn't have a CEL, they had a power limited light which was painful considering you had to count how many times it blinked to get the codes. Same with with my '95 Dakota SLT. I was greatful when I got my '98 Cherokee classic and it would just pop up a number as did my '02 Grand and my current '08. Tell you what is a PITA is trying to pull codes on Subarus, both my '98 Legacy and current '04 Legacy u have to click connectors under the dash together to get codes and if you don't do it in the correct order you get nothing.

Ok so for this key dance.. Do I start the car or just have it where all the dash lights are on? Also what button do I press - C/T , reset, step or menu - ?

Thanks again!

Retrieving codes (2005-2010 Grand Cherokee):

Insert and turn the ignition key from "Off" to "On" three times, moderately fast and without pausing ("ON" is when the digital odometer displays):
Tip: use the "count to 5" method, where "1" is the first "On":
Off > On > Off > On > Off > On
0 1 2 3 4 5
0 - Insert key (Off)
1 - On
2 - Off
3 - On
4 - Off
5 - On At the third "On" the odometer display will read "DTC REPORT" and list the codes. If no codes are present the message "Done" will appear.

Did the key dance - very cool. Not cool is the code. P0305 which was cylinder 5 misfire. I plan on bringing it to the dealer and hopefully they will just take car over it considering I have put less than 300 miles on the Jeep.
