1996 XJ Corporate 8.25 Disc Brake Conversion
 
If you have lifted your XJ and put larger wheels and tires on, you know what I am talking about. Stopping is okay, but when you really need to stop, you need to stand on the brakes. I have been wanting to do this for a long time, but I finally found the right source to get the job done.

Vehicle specs: 1996 XJ, 35" MT MT, 8" Rusty's long arm kit in the front with 8" leaf springs in the rear. There are a ton of other mods, but not necessary to this discussion.

Since I don't have a parking brake, I went with the kit with no internal parking brake as it was not needed. I will be putting front and rear line lockers in the near future for off road brake holding. Plus, that way I can lock the front and rears independantly. More on that in the near future.

The kit comes with basically brackets and discs. Calipers and brake lines are separate. I opted for the SS extended lines along with calipers and dimpled and slotted rotors. The install was a snap. Since I had to pull the axles, I did the outer shaft bearings and seals as well. The old brake hard lines were putting up a fight, so I made my own. All and all, the total installation took about 4 hours. I broke them in and could not be happier. It stops excellent without a lot of effort. Best money I ever spent.

New hard lines and flex SS lines. Just need to weld the retainer tabs to the axle.

Knowing what I know now, I would not have waited this long to make the conversion. Stopping power is 100% better, straighter and it will make a huge difference off road when in the mud and water.

Did you change your master cylinder or add an adjustable proportioning valve?
Also, are you running 15" rims? What kind of clearance is there between the rim and the caliper?

I am running 15" wheels and there is lots of clearance. I didn't measure, but I would say a couple of inches would be about right. Also, I didn't changed out the master cylinder or add a proportioning valve. There is a lot of power to the rear, but it stops great on dry roads. You just need to be a little careful in the winter on snow and ice covered roads. The ass end wants to come around if you stand on them too much. Well worth the trade off for being to stop quickly in the dirt and on dry pavement.

I have used that same conversion on my XJ D44, works pretty well and easy to get parts when needed as it uses GM Calipers (from a Caddy I think I used).

You can get by without an adjustable proportioning valve, the normal modification is to remove the rubber o-ring in the OEM valve that goes to the rear system, this evens out the fluid when applying the brakes. The Calipers need/use more fluid pressure than the old drum setup so you really need to adjust for that some what.

That's a lot of cash......Gotta be a way to do this with new parts for a little better price I would think.

I have rear disc parts off a ZJ D35 I was gonna use to convert either a C8.25 or MJ D44.
