1st oil change on 2012 wk2 ????

It's been 3 months and I'm at 4000 miles. When should I change the oil? The menu said to change it but ur thoughts?

I'd do it now. Engines are built to pretty exacting tolerances these days, but do wear in during the first few thousand miles, loading your oil with metallic debris. I've always thought that the initial oil change is the most important and should always be done on schedule.

I changed mine at 1500 miles for peace of mind. Might be overkill, but it can't hurt. I'll change again when the evic says it's time, then will change with the regular schedule every time after.

I did my first oil change at 3000 (for peace of mind), which was before the oil change indicator called for it. Then I waited for the EVIC to tell me about the next oil change just to see how long it would go. It was just under 8000 miles. I was surprised it was that long, but everything I read tells me that is just fine.

Just brought my Overland home tonight. Dealer wants it back in 3k miles/3 mos to do oil/filter change (no charge to me.)

Do it when the EVIC tells you to. Don't waste your money doing old Skool un-necessary oil changes before the computer tells you to.

I follow the manufacturer's schedule. Who do you think has more to lose, us or the folks selling these vehicles? The dealer is going to tell you 3K miles, and it may appear to be "free" but they're being paid by Chrysler to perform the service. Also, the piston rings and other parts of the engine rely on the friction of the oil to break in and seat properly. If you change the oil too quickly, you jeopardize inhibiting this process. This is why manufacturers don't recommend switching to synthetic oil until after the first service (or even the 2nd).

With that being said, no matter what you do I'm sure you're safe. I'm sure changing the oil every 1K miles won't hurt anything. As long as you feel good with how your Jeep is getting treated, that's all that matters!

I just did mine when the EVIC said that I had to do it and my odometer was at 7500.

Did it myself and I think it would have been easier if I took off the bottom plate instead of working through that little hole. My Jeep wasn't on a lift or anything so reaching under the Jeep was pretty difficult since I had to be a contortionist. The problem was the oil filter. The suggestion of using a oil filter wrench in another thread was the best advice.

Good luck.

Changed the factory oil at 4000 miles and will be changing with synthetic every 5000 miles from now on. I tow and drive in the mountains on a regular basis. The 8000 mark is for basic non towing driving. If you use this utility vehicle for utility then you should change before the 8000 mile mark.
