Shifter not engaging right away?

Hey guys thought I post this here and see if anyone else has run into this. I have a 2001 WJ limited with a 4.7. When I pull the shifter back into drive it acts like it is in neutral untll I back it out and then pull it into place hard then it engages. It has been doing this for quite awhile. Has any one else experienced anything like this with your Jeep. I wonder if it may be as easy as a linkage adjustment. I have been to lax to look into it any futher. Any input would be great.

Tony

My guess would be the linkage needs to be adjusted. I will try and post a manual page when I get on my laptop.

Does this problem allways happen, or only after first startup?
If allways, its probably the adjustment, see attachment.

Re: Shifter not engaging right away?

Well guys after years of this problem......... I'm pretty :o to say it was just that the bracket that clamps onto the shaft coming out of the trans was loose on it. It has a bolt that clamps it onto the shaft and this came loose and allowed the bracket to slide out some and was wobly. I should have just checked this long ago and it would have been solved. :slapfight: That is what being Lazy will get you...LOL

Thanks again for the ideas and the breakdown of the shifter to follow.
