Electric Trailer Brakes
 
Who has fitted electric trailer brakes and controller to their WK2?

How did you go about fitting it and wiring it up?

Im thinking about maybe using a Redarc and mounting the knob and light in one of the blank switches where the traction control, hazards and stuff are.

Edit: Do all GCs come with Trailer Sway Control or was that an optional extra?

I've got a Prodigy P3 to fit up...
My plan is to install it in the cubby at the front of the console - I intend to take power direct from the battery via a 30a circuit breaker and use twin 6mm cable so the controller has a direct earth feed back to the battery (apparently P3's are a bit sensitive to that). I know that is pretty heavy cable but voltage drop is not on the agenda. The blue brake wire to the back will be 5mm at least.
The brake switch feed will come from the trailer plug stop light wiring installed by the dealer when they fit the tow bar.

If you had many hours to spare to plow through the 68 page JGC thread on the caravaners forum there are posts and pics using Redarc units. Also recently there was a specific post on the pros and cons of a variable voltage controller over a proportional one.

I understand trailer sway control is standard on all our WK2's.

Yep that are those.. earth to battery important.

Whilst I had access to the back I also ran 2 B&S at the same time from the back to install a isolator and Anderson plug set-up.

The setup is working great, as it happens camping is on the back right now as we head down the coast..

For the controller, do i need to run a wire from the unit to the trailer plug, or is there already one in the car that i just need plug in?

If you have a mopar install there is a blue wire you can tap into, I think it's somewhere on the left hand drivers wiring loom. I personally ran a separate thicker wire to the trailer plug.

Yeah i got Mopar tow bar installed from dealer. Hopefully its nice and easy

My P3 is now installed in the little cubby at the front and I ran a separate blue wire all the way to the back - I thought the blue wire in the dealer harness (accessible under the LH rear cargo plastic bin, and where your stop light feed comes from) was too light.
Like zzkazu I installed other wires at the same time while the trim was off. For Hella power socket at rear, interior Anderson plug for aux battery and Anderson plug at tow bar for van.

How hard was it to run a new blue wire? how much trim did you need to remove to run it.
Im going to run a RedArc with the light and the control mounted on a spare slot in center console. Still deciding whether to run new blue wire or not.

The kick panels are removed easily once the rubber seal is pulled back and you just push the cable underneath into the floor channel running along the car. To run it to the console was simply looping it over the existing trim, although not sure how you would access the area you intend installing the RedArc controller.

Like zzkazu says the trim will come out pretty easily as along the doors it all snaps into place with push in fasteners. There's a .pdf file omn removing trim http://www.wk2jeeps.com/wk2_interior_trim.htm
At the back again its not hard to take out all the stuff to get to the tub so as to get a wire through a grommet.
Big warning though if you remove trim at the rear all the way including the large plastic tub around the spare (that allows the carpet to be lifted) - there are 2 wires into a dinky plug connected to a black box on the tub. This box is an antenna and part of the passive entry canbus system. Remove the wires BUT do not turn the ignition on while removed. This will spike the canbus and kill the passive entry until codes are cleared and the system reset and reflashed by the dealer. (more on this refer to threads on "key not recognised" on this forum, there's a couple of posts specifically mentioning issues with this).
I purchased a set of plastic trim removal tools from Supercheap that made it really easy to lift the trim along the sides and didn't leave any marks. It didn't need super force so don't just rip.
My advice would be to take controller power from the battery and don't tap into the Jeep system at all.
Except for the brake signal back to the controller from the stop light wire in the trailer wiring loom installed by the dealer

I concur direct power from battery but for the control signal you will need either to run a separate wire (preferred option) or tap into blue wire which btw isn't connected to any CAR interface but will need to be connected to the brake controller.
