Break-in Oil

Is the oil in Chrysler engines as they come from the factory specially formulated or is it just standard Mopar oil of the appropriate viscosity such as that which is sold by the dealers?

I have heard both points of view advanced with great certitude.

My own view is that the oil is probably standard Mopar oil, but I don't insist upon it.

Does anyone here know the answer for dead certain?

Mopar 5W-20, same they use if you took it in and they changed it.

I changed mine after 1500 miles.

Picked up my jgc on wednesday. Specifically asked what oil was in it, and if it was different for a new factory engine.
Was told by sales manager it is regular mopar dino oil 5w20.

In my experiance... most people here on the forums know more about the JGC than most sales managers and ASSociated staff. I've had sales people tell me things...bought a honda years ago and the sales guy told me some bs about the radio/nav system. I told him he was wrong. He said he was 100% sure and I bet him if he was right, I would pay retail on the car... if wrong I named my own price... he wouldnt bet but I proved him wrong and went to the next dealer to do the deal

I have a related question. The maintenance schedule indicates first oil change at 8K but most of us seem to feel an early change is in order. I have 700 miles now on my 2012 Hemi and plan to change to Mobil 1 syn when I change. What are your opinions on when to make the first change?

I've put near 300000 miles on several engines.

Technically there is no reason to change oil prior to the first oil change reminder, which will occur somewhere between 3500 and 8000 miles, unless it takes you more than a year to put those miles on. I'd wait till the second oil change before switching to synthetic.

Changing early is an old wives tale, like changing every 3000 miles. But it does make some here more comfortable. Something about cleaning the sand out of the casting... but after 100 miles that grit has already done its damage or has been caught in the oil filter. So do what makes you feel good.

I basically agree this makes us feel good. The tolerances of modern engines during manufacturing is so much better than even 10 years ago and I think the filtering is better today although not sure what Jeep does. Maybe waiting for 8,000 to change to synthetic is part of that thinking if engines really don't go through much of a break-in these days. Just go for the synthetic early for whatever reduced wear and increase in MPG there might be?

How about at the very least changing the initial filter earlier than recommended (and topping off the oil level) to be sure it is not clogged early by break-in wear? When filters clog they allow unfiltered oil to circulate, increasing wear.

Re: Break-in Oil

Doubt there is enough residue to clog the filter. Jeep may use magnets just as Mercedes does to help collect debris. Does anyone know? Nontheless, I would change oil at same time as filter esp. if you thought there was enough stuff to clog a filter. I'm going to shoot for around 3K for first change, then at 8K and 7500 after that.

Personally I agree with the early first change. I was just throwing our another option for those who want to keep the factory fill in place for the "recommended first interval".

I've got the oil and filter to do my v6 this weekend. It will have approximately 2500 miles on it. After that I'll probably rely on the oil life monitoring system (while using synthetic oil).

My salesman and the service writters both said to do first oil change at 3500 miles which is what I did, against my own judgement. Then at 8,000 miles and each 8,000 or every 6 months thereafter. Now 17,200 miles and still cruising along trouble free.

Think you and mot have the right idea. I wish a Jeep engine engineer would chime in on this. The service rep at my dealer said no need before 5,000 so the opinions are all over the place. Guess there isn't any clear answer or if there was we wouldn't recognize it. There would be no need for these discussions:-)
