Ordered a Overland and on the bill see $239.00 for window etching is this a scam ? Dealer says if car is stolen or totaled i get $2,500 in addition. From who? Talked to my insurance agent with window etching i save $12.00 a year. Any one know about this window etching is it good to have ? If not i will call and have this removed from my bill.
All my cars have this etching. All the cars i am seeing today have it. I'm sure people didn't get this done after. How many have this etching and wasn't aware of the charge? I must have payed this before and didn't realize it.
Must be local, only one of my herd has glass with etched VINs. It is a '92 & reasonably sure were not done at the factory. In fact I am not seeing VINs on any of the normal places (doors, fenders) on the Laredo, if are more than on the VIN plate, they must be hidden.
They mentioned it when I bought mine but told them no, that is why I have insurance. When it came time to sign the papers I saw the charge ($239 as well) and told them NO. They took it off along with a few other little charges they tried to sneak by with. Funny think is that the window was already etched but didin't notice it till I got home.
It seriously takes like 20 seconds to etch 4 windows. I used to have to do this as a detailer at the "luxury brand" dealership I used to work at. Such a money grab from the dealers...
Basically a profit center for the dealership. The etching that magically appeared on my invoice after I negotiated the deal on my Lexus was passed off as a "mandatory" charge. After I told them to f themselves and was ready to walk away for the $249, the "mandatory" charge magically disappeared.
I remember a link to the etching website (name slips my mind) that proudly proclaimed how the company worked with the dealership to help maximize the dealer's profits! Once I remember the name of the etching company I'll try to find the link.
You can buy a kit for $20-30. This is one of those items that works out to nearly 100% profit for the dealer. Our local Subaru dealer puts $10 worth of pinstriping and door edge guards on their cars and charges $600 for its "appearance and protection package." Apparently these scams work!
