Tinted the Windshield!

I just wanted to let everyone know that I got the windshield tinted in the WK2 yesterday. I went with Suntek CXP80, which has a 44% TSER and still allows 80% of the light through. I elected to not have the shop try and tint over the dot matrix (even though there are methods to hide it or get it to adhere via vinyl, painting, sanding or extra glue) and instead hand cut the film around it while "fading" it into the first line of the dots. Hard to explain, but it looks great and due to the film being so light, you can not see a line unless you really look for it. The pros that I have noticed so far are a noticeable decrease in heat when the sun is beating down on you through the windshield and the glare from oncoming headlights at night is greatly reduced. Minor cons would be that polarized sunglasses cause a slight color shift on the windows of cars in front of you...not really a big issue to me, but it may bother others. I still need to leave it in the sun for a few days (if it would ever stop raining) for it to cure properly, but I would highly recommend this mod. Some people may say it is highly illegal, which I am aware of, but 80% tint is really not even detectable. Llumar also makes a similar 80% tint called Blue Air. I would try to get some pictures of the tint, but I really am not sure the 80% would even show up.

Here is the film I went with. I also have ther CXP18 on the front windows and it is a perfect match to the OEM rear windows.

It would be in violation of Maine and New Hampshire's motor vehicle laws.

It is a violation of 49 state laws, except for Hawaii...

How is the suction of certain devices, such as radar detectors or easy pass, etc?

I'm going to wait for it to fully cure before trying my radar detector, but I will report back.

On my WJ I never had a problem with the suctions of my radar detector and my GPS but I did wait about 3 weeks to a month before I applied it just to be sure.

I was going to get my front window tinted with Llumar stuff but if I get a cracked window my insurance would not pay for the tint so I did not, this stuff does work to help keep the car cooler.

tint laws are a funny thing. I know people who have gotten tickets for 20% side windows in my 35% state. I have 5% all around and 40% on the windshield.

It cuts down on glare, it keeps the sun out of the interior, and it looks amazing.
