3 questions on pending purchase of '08 WK

1 Attachment(s)
Hello,
I'm getting close to closing a deal on a used '08 WK 4.7L w/Quadra-DriveII and Tow IV packages from a private seller. Seller insists no prior accidents, and the Carfax report corroborates that. Dealer maintained. No mechanical modifications either. Couple of concerns I'd like to bounce off the forum if anyone has a moment:

1) Noticed a rubbing sound and vibration when going forward while purposely turning the wheel hard right. I think I traced it to contact between inside of the front driver's side tire, and the end of the sway bar. Tires were replaced at some point with same model and size listed on TireRack as OEM, Goodyear Fortera HL. I think this forum discussion is mostly describing the same thing:

Is shifting the sway bar, and/or perhaps the steering range limit, typically a simple/cheap task?

2) There is no lower front grill, as shown in the pic. Is this typical, since it has the tow hooks or something? It seems like whatever radiator this is should be a bit better protected.

3) Local dealer offers to check engine compression, check ECM code history, and general inspection for around $150. Would you guys have this done before purchase? It has about 60k miles and all preventive maintenance appears to have been done.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Moving the sway bar is pretty simple, it is four bolts under the front of the vehicle

Thanks! Any good aftermarket lower grill solutions? Just thinking to reduce the chance of some large piece of highway debris hitting that radiator.

08hemi has a how to thread on making one out of screen from home depot. I dont have one on mine because i feel it is unnecessary, i have had two major collisions with debris on the highway and he only time i damaged the radiator was from a deer. Mesh wouldnt have done anything. At highways speeds, mesh isnt going to stop anyhing that is going to damage the radiator. Now if you want to do it for looks thats ok, but it is not going to protect anything

And your first issue sounds like something isn't tightened down properly...but no way of knowing for sure till you get under there and check it out. Good luck I love my 08!!

Thank you gentlemen! I just added another question in original post:

If I was going to pay that much for compression check I would have them replace the primary spark plugs, since they will have them out anyway. If it were me I would just get Autozone to read the codes and forget the compression check. I bought an 08 last year with the 4.7 and am very unhappy with the engine noise on startup. It sounds like the lifters are bad or the timing chains are hitting the cover. Cold weather makes it louder. After driving for a mile of after warm up it is ok. I now start with remote start a few minutes be fore I take off so it will be ok when I leave. I have ask the dealer to look into the problem several times. They always tell me that the 4.7 and 3.7 make noise and not to waste money on fixing something that will come back. For this reason I would not buy another 4.7 or 3.7 at any price. I wish I had waited for a Hemi. And i have been told they make some noise also.

Thanks Don's GC. Sorry to hear of your noise trouble. I didn't notice any unusual startup noise with this one, but it was around 70 degrees outside.

Have the dealer include diagnosing Issue #1 with the cost of #3.

$150 seems fair if you are truly serious about the vehicle. That way if something is found you can negotiate the price based on the repair. Would rather lose the $150 if something comes up in the inspection than to not know and buy it.

I would also recommend running an "Autocheck" report - they seem to be more thorough and accurate than Carfax.

i personally dont trust carfax, when my aunts subaru was in an accident the body shop (very well known, reputable and been in business for ages) said that there wont be anything reported to carfax...there was quite a bit of damage from it being hit head on by a drunk driver.
