Torque Converter and PCM relationship
I have a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.7 with the 545RFE automatic transmission and had been experiencing vibration problems between 40 and 50 mph, which cleared +50 mph and I suspected either a problem with the 4th gear or with the torque converter clutch. I took the car to an automatic transmission specialist, who also suspected the torque converter. The torque converter has been changed and the problem has gone. However, what they are saying is that the signal from PCM does not reach 100%, which is causing the problem to happen in the first place i.e. the wear in the torque converter clutch plate is due to a partial closure signal from the PCM causing the wear and hence vibration. They have said that if I do not replace the PCM, the torque converter will soon fail with the same problem again. As they have quoted me $1,500 for this work in the UAE, I would just like some independent reaffirmation that this sounds technically reasonable before I make this commitment.

Thanks for posting this mmain. It sounds like my problem also and it's the best explanation I got so far. I have a thread with a lot of details about this issue. Since you have experienced this or similar issue also, can you please check my thread and verify if you could fully relate to my problem. That would enable me to stop looking for solutions, bite the bullet and go for the big one, change the torque converter. Here's my thread:

Briteway, whilst the problem sounds similar. Please note that the replacement of the torque converter is not necessarily the solution to my problem, if the root cause lies in the PCM, which I anticipate being a more costly repair than the torque converter itself.
