extended warranty or not?

I bought a 2012 WK2 Limited last Thursday and the dealer was trying to sell me 7yr/100000 mile extended warranty for $950. I have never purchased one before and my old ZJ ran without any problems for 160000 miles. Most work on the old ZJ I did it myself.

With all the electronics and computer controlled stuff on the new jeep, I am not sure if it DIY friendly. I still need to read thru the brochure to see what is not covered and what is covered.

How many of you have purchased extended warranty? Is it a good idea to get it?

thanks,
Aiyer

I went with the MaxCare Lifetime warranty for $2000.

I got it on mine, but it was about $1300. I plan on doing all the maintenance myself, but if something breaks I want them to fix it. The best part IMO is that they give you a rental while the repairs are being made. That saves a tremendous amount of time...

$950 for a 7/100000 seems a little low. are you sure it wasn't by a third party? when i was negotiating at my dealership, the finance guy said, i can save you more money if you go with this other option - not mentioning that it wasn't the chrysler warranty.

He did mention that it was the added care plus. I will double check again tomorrow.

My understanding is that if you want a plan that is close to the original warranty coverage you need to go with max care. The cost difference is a few hundred from what I have seen online but the price you have for the added care plus looks pretty good so the max care may be as well.

Our GC is going through a set of repairs lately so I'm seriously considering getting a plan. There are two online sites I've been looking at, http://www.chryslerwarrantys.com and http://www.chryslerfactoryplans.com. Prices have gone up a bit in part because the GC now has 20K miles (in 1 year) but that's what we get for waiting. Main question is do we pay for coverage to 100K (which I would only go to 6 years on) or do we get the lifetime. We really like the Jeep but if our recent repair history doesn't get better (3 trips in one month) I wonder if we will be willing to deal with all of the trips to the shop...

If I was having that many problems at that low of a mileage then I would get rid of it and get another Jeep or even another vehicle. If a company does not make a quality enough vehicle to last atleast 100k without any major problems then I don't want to own it. I never get rid of a vehicle till it has atleast 100k on it and some much longer and have never had a major (or minor) problem out of any of them. I took a gamble with Chrysler this time but knew going into it that if I did have problems either in warranty or out of warranty (<100k miles on everything besides the drivetrain) that I would take a loss and trade/sell it and get another brand and never look back at Chrysler. These companies offer the extended warranties because they are huge profit generators and they know the odds of something coming in for major repair but if it will make you sleep better at night then go for it.

We took a chance on the Jeep as well but in all fairness one of the problems was a noise that the vehicle had for months that we finally had a dealer diagnose properly.

I've actually asked a CFP about vehicle warranties and, from a financial perspective, it's a matter of how long you keep the vehicle and how much you want to keep the vehicle. I look at getting the warranty as a commitment...if I'm going to spend the $2K for the warranty I only want to do so if I will be keeping the vehicle long enough to justify the cost. We are normally ones to keep cars for 10 years or more and at least 150K miles so if the repair frequency isn't too much getting a lifetime warranty may make sense.

Think I may stay on the fence for now and if the GC ends up being a "shop queen" then I'll have to think about cutting our losses :(. Would be good to know if the warranty prices increase at any other points (24K miles, 2 years, etc).

I never buy an extended warranty on ANYTHING.
They make money for the company selling it. 'Nuff said.

Same here, and 9 times out of 10 they'll try to weasel their way out of honoring it. READ the fine print.

I had an '02 Sebring convertible with a 2.7L V6 that ran great until 118,000 miles, which is when the internal water pump went out and they wanted $1500.00 to replace it. That repair bill wasn't much less than the car was worth. I traded it instead for my '11 JGC and, after waiting a few months to make sure it wasn't a lemon, I went ahead and bought the unlimited maxcare warranty. I consider it $1900.00 worth of piece of mind, and if I don't ever use it, well that's OK too because that means the car didn't give me any problems. Sort of like having major medical insurance and never having to use it because you stayed healthy - that's a good thing.

Yep.... that's my only fear as well. If I cannot provide a documentation of this or that... they will say warranty is void and I end up losing all my $$.

My old ZJ was completely workable as a DIY. With the electronic gizmos they have these days... if I have to replace the nav or something of that sort... it will cost me at least $1k.

I will call and get the details. I'll probably get the warranty... as long as it covers the electronic gadgets and main components.
