V6 engine light on while towing?
Hey everyone, the wife and I are in the process of buying a Jayco X213 trailer (4300 lbs). We have a 2011 v6 Overland (max tow 5000lbs). We took the trailer for a test tow yesterday to the local scales to confirm weights. We're pushing our weight limits but with the weight distribution hitch it towed surprisingly well.

Anyway... After we towed it for about 30 km we made a pit stop and shortly after starting up again the "malfunction indicator light" chimed and came on. It stayed lit and did not flash. I also noticed that the "Eco" indicator did not appear while coasting or during low throttle. I checked the manual and phoned the dealer. Each said that as long as the light wasn't flashing it was probably ok to continue driving. I booked an appointment for tomorrow to get it looked at but while I was driving today I noticed that the light was out and the "Eco" indicator was working again. Aside from the above nothing else changed and the Jeep continued to run normally.

The dealer told me yesterday that it was probably just something to do with emissions or the O2 sensor and that towing the trailer might have just "worked it" more than it was accustomed to.

I'm at the point where I'm ready to sign the dotted line on the trailer and as mentioned above it tows pretty good but before I do I'd like to get your thoughts about the engine light coming on and going out within 24 hours.

Re: V6 engine light on while towing?
Find out what the code is and we can go from there.

I would find out what made your Jeep mad before buying the Jayco.

Autozone or a good parts store should be able to read the codes for you.

Yeah that's the game plan. I got an appointment
for the AM. But the weirdest thing is now happening...Everytime I put it in reverse it's detecting an object on the passenger side. I cleaned the sensors but it keeps doing it... my wife is unimpressed to say the least.

Re: V6 engine light on while towing?
Ok so I'm at the dealership right now and the tech just told me that the code (unknown exactly which one) told him the PCM needs to be replaced. He said its a common problem and he'll let me know if it can be done today. Any thoughts on this? Isn't the PCM the main computer? If its in need of replacement shouldn't the light still be on (it went out yesterday)? Any thoughts?

...hahaha new useless update. The service advisor approached me with dread in his eyes and said, "the tech is still lookong to see if we have a PCM but he says that you shouldn't be towing that trailer cause it's over your tow weight". I promptly corrected him and advised him that the V6 is rated for 5000 lbs and that the engine light came on after I had left the scales where I had confirmed the trailer weight to be 4300lbs. He looked at me and said, "oh, ok, I'll tell him". man?

Re: V6 engine light on while towing?
My engine light came on again today for the 3rd time in the last 2months and each time it was all under normal driving conditions. It has always gone off after a few days so I haven't been concerned, but maybe now I should take it in and have the PCM checked out. Interesting.

Ok, so I just left the shop. They said they flashed the PCM and that if problems continue to return and they'll replace the PCM... I would hope that should I have further problems that they don't leave me or my 7 month pregnant wife in a lurch...I'll post what codes they found when I get home.
