knocking or ticking noise
I sometimes have a knocking or loud tick on start up. This happens maybe one or two times a week give or take a couple days. It happens at random and may not be heard for a week or so then it happens again. any ideas or have anyone experianced this?

Re: knocking or ticking noise
Now there is a big difference between a knock and a tick. If It's a knock you you could be developing bearing issues which is not good. If it is what I think (and hope) it is it sounds like valves tapping on startup. If you have a lot of miles on your engine the hydraulic valve lash adjusters wear or get gummed up over time and loose their prime. When you start your engine after sitting they have to refill with oil and will tick for some time till they refill. This is a pretty common issue on high mileage 4.7s and nothing to worry about except for a little embarrassment. People including me on an old Durango have had some success running Sea Foam in their oil to try to get rid of varnish but it may never go away totally.

Re: knocking or ticking noise
I hope its nothing serious. I have added seafoam on the first oil change and thats when the noises quieted down some. I also have a misfire code in cylinder no. 1 this has been happening the whole time i have owned the jeep. thought this mite add to the noise. but i have not been able to track down the issue with that yet. new injector going in this weekend. already did plugs and coil.

Re: knocking or ticking noise
Is the engine running rough as well? A real misfire at least would let it run rougher at least in idle. If the lash adjuster gets real bad, it could even cause the rocker arm to fall of and then for sure you will have a real misfire and a rough running engine. But also a dropped valve seat could cause the rockerarm to fall of. I would remove the left cylinder head cover and have a look if the rocker arms from cylinder #1 are in place. You can then also feel the rockers for any play, good valve lash adjusters should keep the rockers without any play.

Re: knocking or ticking noise
Well the noise was gone for 2 weeks now its back. It starts on the first start up of the day then after my 12 hour shift it will start again after it gets the initial startup out of the way it wont do it the rest of the day. Still stumped
