Is the diesel JGC worth the wait?

Does anyone know if the diesel will be released in 2012 as the MY2013, or will it be released in 2013 as all the reports "say"?

Anyways, with the added cost of diesel, and the likelihood of the there being a diesel tax making it cost more than the hemi, I'm not sure I can wait for 2013, let alone justify the added cost (if there's a $5K increase + the added cost of diesel in the US).

The special edition "Altitude" is looking pretty good right now, depending on its own release date.

No, it will NOT be released this year. The earliest I would plan on driving a CRD would be March 2013, and the latest would be September 2013.

I love my Diesel, fast and economical. I do not know why they would tax diesel as it is used by trucks and if anything should be discounted. This is because it is more efficient for big heavy SUVs.
Waiting a year is a long time.....

I guess if you are one of those that keeps a vehicle for 10 years then it will be worth the wait. Judging by SRT8 price elasticity I would presume Jeep will price diesel option competitively, probably in line with the 5.7L V8 which is around $2000 msrp. Added cost of diesel should be more than offset by its efficiency beyond 30,000 miles. Towing capacity, range extension and uniqueness are in favor of waiting.

In Australia, Diesel is heavily taxed, so much so, that it is more expensive than petrol.
It is this way because the Govt believes that heavy industry are the primary uses of Diesel, and they are the users who are the heavyduty users and doing the most damage to the roads.
The Govt. have not yet realised that diesel is now becoming very popular with private motorists and these motorists are now being penalised for the truckies usage.

No it is not.
Petrol and Diesel are taxes the same, it is the petroleum market that dictates they price variance.

I was really hoping the diesel GC would have been here this summer, but I'm prepared to find a low mile used 2011 or 2012 Touareg or 2012 ML. Quite disappointing that it's taking Jeep so long to release a model that is already in production for other markets.

**before anyone chimes in with the lack of off-road capability of my alternative options, please realize that I owned a '98 5.9 ZJ for 8 years and never took it off-road, was actually lowered for handling improvement.

Re: Is the diesel JGC worth the wait?

I would wait for the diesel. My current suv is a 2011 Touareg TDI Sport. It gets 25 mpg in mixed driving and an honest 34 mpg at 60 mph on the interstate!

This is with the Aisin 8 speed transmission and 3.27 gears. By far it is the best on road vehicle that I have ever owned. The only weak point for me is the Torsen center diff. It doesn't lock.

When Jeep offers the JGC with the CRD and 8 speed ZF in the US I may jump ship.

Even with a $5k premium over the hemi the diesel with pay for itself after 50k miles. At 100k miles at current fuel prices the savings would be $5k for the diesel. Also diesel resale is way higher than a gas model.

Re: Is the diesel JGC worth the wait?

It seems that repairs end up costing way more based on some research and discussions I've seen. Are the consumer based diesels in the US much more sensitive to bad fuel, or is this really not an issue? How are people in AU, etc that have had the diesel out for a year or so doing with problems/repair costs?
