Transmission question
 
I have a 2011 HEMI with the 5 speed transmission. I had the TSB done so supposedly the 2011 5 speed is equivalent to the 2012 6 speed. I have been experimenting with accelerating between 50 and 80 mph.

When cruising at 50 mph, if I hit the shift lever to the left so that "5" is diplayed, then punch the pedal, I feel a downshift, and then an uphift. I assume the down shift is to 4th gear and then the upshift is back to 5th gear? If I am cruising at 50 mph with the transmission in "D", I feel the same downshift then an upshift. In the latter case, is the transmission downshifting to 5th gear, then upshifting to 6th (overdrive) gear?

It seems that when cruising in "5" the downshift/upshift is smoother than when cruising in "D". In addition to avoiding the "MDS drone", this is another reason I prefer driving in "5" rather than "D".

Its hard to tell what gear ratio you are actually running in as the transmission is not direct select, only a limiter. This has confused many, experts included. I think the 5/6 speed thread had some decent observations of rpm vs gear ratio vs speed.

You probably need to be diving 70-80mph or more than 3500 rpm to have some certainty which of the 6 gear ratios are in play. The transmission has two over drives, the second OD (i.e. the 6th ratio) is disabled when you slap down to 5 at highway speed. I use 5 to reduce hunting in slow/fast traffic conditions.
