turning

Hey all Ive got a question. When I turn my jeep at full lock like turing into a parking spot etc. Its not very smooth in the steering, can be kind of jerky. Is that normal for wj jeeps. Ive driven cars before where its really smooth. Just wondering if its suppose to be like that.

Re: turning

That is a common problem with ZJ's, my previous Jeep did the same thing. I haven't heard too many stories about this with WJ's but I'm sure it's equally likely. It's usually a bad viscous coupling in the transfer case.

Re: turning

Do you have quadra-drive? (full-time 4x4?) When you turn, the inside wheel is turining a tighter raduis than the outside. Since the front axel is live, its trying to turn both wheels at the same speed. Your not hurting anything... Don't be doin donuts on dry asphalt and you'll be fine.

Re: turning

yea your right dougie, I just called the jeep dealer about it. He asked if it was 4 wheel drive/ quadra drive and it is. He said that is normal, it is suppose to hop like that on sharp turns. He said anything that is 4 wheel drive is going to hop like that on sharp turns and that just means its working. He explained the whole thing about the transmission and transfer case as well and why it does it.

Re: turning

I also had another question that someone on here might know since alot of you guys put aftermarket wheels on your jeeps. I will be getting the srt 20 inch wheels with 275 45 20 tires. here is the difference between the two on my jeep.

tire
Sidewall: 6.01 in
Radius: 14.51 in
Diameter: 29.03 in
Circumf: 91.19 in
Revs/mile: 694.79
New Tire
Sidewall: 4.87 in
Radius: 14.87 in
Diameter: 29.74 in
Circumf: 93.44 in
Revs/mile: 678.05

Speedometer reading with new tire is 2.47% too slow.
When your speedometer is reading 60mph you are actually traveling 61.45mph.
Does anyone think this will mess anything up with the transfer cases or quadra drive or anything? thanks again, your guys experience helps alot.

Re: turning

Regarding your turning issue you probably need to put some additive in your diffs. If you have not changed the gear oil per schedule you should change it and be sure to use the correct gear lube with the additive.

Sorry I can't think of the additive name, just call any Jeep dealer parts counter and they will tell you what it is. Doing this will virtually eliminate the problem. Been there, done that!

Re: turning

The quadra drive indeed needs limited slip additive or friction modifier in the diff fluid. Without the additive the variloc will lock up completely in tight turns causing the tire hop.

Re: turning

Bigger tires are not a problem, as long as they are the same.
