shifter question

while driving my shifter moves freely from drive to neutral, reverse, park,,, i thought its supposed to stop at neutral and this happens while pressing the brake or not, is this normal?

Why would you ever try to do that??? If you were driving at say 40MPH and it actually went into reverse or park there would be catastrophic failure of most transmission and driveline parts and Chrysler would laugh at any warranty claim. Can't decide whether to call that stupid or ballsy.

Re: shifter question

It is probably set p that way as a safety measure to avoid the damage Sliter is referring to. I would not try to verify this on my Jeep. ;)

Re: shifter question

Given the location of the shifter and lack of middle front seat for someone to sit in and kick the shifter I can't picture the scenario where you'd accidently put it in park or reverse. You said you tried to do it not accidently did it, I am not going to try it to find out.

It will not actually engage reverse.. it shifts the jeep to neutral, but will not shift into reverse while moving forward (at least at a substantial speed). My dog has knocked my jeep into reverse while going around 35-40 mph. It just stayed in neutral.

Pretty normal to shift into neutral without depressing the brake. I'm not sure about reverse, but since it doesnt actually shift to reverse, I don't think it's a design flaw at all.

Re: shifter question

Not a design flaw but I think they must have designed it that way intentionally. If it were to engage R or even slam into park going 30 MPH you would need a tow.
