Differences between 265/60/18 and 275/65/18

Hi all,

I'm planning upgrading from the OEM tires to Goodyear SilentArmor tires in either the standard 265/60/18 size or slightly bigger 275/65/18. Would the bigger 32" tire noticeably help off-road performance? I assume it will hurt the mileage and acceleration a little, and throw off the speedo. I'd also be forced to buy a larger diameter spare as well.

It will make the truck look a bit more aggressive, but I'd like to know that the car would be functionally better with the bigger tires if I have to live with the downsides.

I'm a newbie to off-roading but I hope to be taking it out moderate trails in the Sierras and southwestern deserts once every month or two. This is on a Limited with the ORA2 package.

Thanks!

The width difference isn't much but you're going around 1.5" larger in diameter. I think there have been some threads with guys saying the 275/65/18 can rub . I know a guy with the RR 2.5" lift and that size tire w/ a 0 offset wheel and he had a little rubbing that required a grinder to eliminate.
If the rest of the vehicle is stock, I don't think that just having a slightly taller tire is going to be that big of a difference in terms of what terrain you can tackle and what you can't. If you are new to offroading, then learning about your vehicle and the proper ways to drive off road will make more difference than those 2 tire sizes. Just my opinion.

You could also go with 265/65/18.

Oh I definitely agree with that. The most important part on the car is the nut behind the wheel. However, if I'm going to buying tires I might as well get the best option that works best for me.

Definitely. I just got new tires and went from the stock 30.5's to about a 31.5 - I probably could have gone up one more size but I think that increase is plenty. There are a lot of good tire review threads for good AT tires too that should help you if you're not 100% sure of what to get yet.
