remote start

I know the remote start feature has been disabled for out JGCs as it apparently is prohibited by the ADR. I was reading the current Autobarn catalogue today and saw this on page 7:

VIPER SMARTSTART KIT $399

Now you can remote start, lock and unlock your car just by pushing a button on your smartphone; using the Viper SmartStart App from Directed, the leader in vehicle security and remote start. The simple graphical interface gives you control over the following features of your installed Viper remote start or security with remote start system:
Lock / Arm
Unlock / Disarm
Remote Car Starter
Trunk Release
Panic
You can also control multiple vehicles great for families! and assign more than one user to control a vehicle. It's easy with SmartStart!
But, this is only the beginning! Viper SmartStart is loaded with additional features including GPS tracking, roadside assistance, home control, parked car finder and more.

If remote start is prohibited by the ADR, how is this legal?

Re: remote start

That is an American website, and Remote Start is not illegal there.
You could retro fit it to an existing Jeep, but you need to ensure that it is not going to upset the canbus.

I'm thinking of getting the remote start kit from Mopar, Part #82212137 $259 us$

Encl from a previous post, the install instructions, you will just have to get your dearler to re-program the fob's after the install to make it work..

Re: remote start

I dont think you will find a dealer who will re-program the car for remote start. Others have tried but received only refusals.
Before spending any money on parts, find a dealer who will re-program.

My dealer said they would 'give it a go'.

They have others enquiring about it as well...

It's like musical horns, and cheap HID headlight upgrades. It's not illegal to sell them, but in a lot of cases it's illegal to use them.

I am very interested in remote start, Esp in Canberra it would be great for warming up the car.

Please let us know how you go

Unless you live in an extreme climate, you would have to ask yourself, what is the benefit?

40c day I normally start the car before loading it. That means jumping in it to start it.
Remote start would be excellent.

Re: remote start

I agree with Deserthucker and Spentan, that they do fall in the "Extreme" climate areas, which could benefit from Remote Start. However, the great majority of us do not face those extremes, and it would possibly be more of a liability in the majority of instances to have the car started without anyone being in it. Insurance companies would have a picnic if someone reported that they started the car remotely, then when they came out to the car, it was being driven off by the local crimegang. Probably not the best tool in a big city. I know that is an extreme example, but something you need to consider.
