Steering Wheel Play
Ok I'm stumped on this. Everything is tight from the gear box down to the tires. Replaced the steering box and intermediate shaft going from steering column to steering box. Everything is fine EXCEPT that there is a minute amount of play in the steering wheel. It feel like if you have a worn U-joint and you feel that dead spot on the joint. Is there any other u-joints in the steering column besides the shaft going to the box? Could a worn bearing or bushing in the column cause this.

All ball joints, TRE and drag link joints are tight and don't have play. It's not play in the linkage but more like in the steering column. I've tried checking the play in the wheel with the shaft off but without a little resistance you can't feel anything. I'm thinking it could be something in the steering column.. The play is before the box and shaft.

Re: Steering Wheel Play
make sure your bolts in the intermediate shaft are TIGHT! a not-tight-enough but still feels tight joint will feel slopping exactly as you describe.

Re: Steering Wheel Play
I am not sure about this, but there almost has to be bushings or bearings in the top and bottom of the steering column. Can you grab hold of the shaft coming down to the U joint and feel any up and down play there. I have a little play in my wheel, but I'm sure it's in that u joint. I can see it move some when someone else tries to turn the wheel while I am looking at it with the hood up. It seems to always be this way with bearing play or vibrations. They are soooo hard to find! Pleas keep us all in the know on this one.

Re: Steering Wheel Play
I found what the issue is. When I replaced my steering box I had to replace the intermediate shaft also. But instead of buying a new one I put a used one off ebay  I know I know bad move. I see the play is in the slip yoke area in the engine bay where the two shafts slide into each other. I tapped the end of a wooden shim in there and the play went away. So I ordered a new shaft and hopefully this will cure it.

Re: Steering Wheel Play
I hope not cause there is supposed to be no play in that joint. I know when that shaft is fully extended its supposed to be really tight. When you collapse the shaft it has a lot of play. For the time being I took a wood shim and wedged it on the top the the slip joint and the play is gone. Don't know how long that will last but that is where the play is coming from
