Poor mans intake.

So i didnt want to drop a ton of money on an intake. So next best thing to me is just a cone filter. Filter was 3 1/2" so i had to get a spacer to go from 3" to 3 1/2". Band clamp that and done. Also has to put a spacer on the other end to make a tight seal on the stock intake pipe. Got a new 5/8' tube. All and all it costs under $50. I can feel throttle response has improved. Let me know what you think.

IMO, you're off to a good start, but it's also is allowing engine compartment air into the airbox so intake air may not be as cool as it was before. I'd also question whether the filter area of the cone filter in the picture is as large as the stock filter. Maybe do a little measuring to see how close the two are in sq. in. For sure you'll get more cool sounding noise with that setup though. If you can somehow seal the filter from the engine compartment, and open up the front and bottom of the airbox to as much ambient air as possible, you'll end up pretty much with ambient air going into the engine.

FWIW, I use a modified LX SRT-8 airbox with most of the bottom cut out (to contour with the fenderwell) and an additional 3 in. inlet drilled into the front of the airbox, just under the level of the filter. I also have a heat deflector shield on the frame rail that keeps any stray heat away from the box. I still use the stock size K and N air filter. Only time my IAT is not at ambient is when I am putting around town. Above about 40 mph it's always at ambient. Also, consider switching to the Challenger IAT sensor that robpp discovered, http://jeepgarage.org/showthread.php?t=28102 . It samples air temp. from the center of the tube as opposed to the outer part where the stock one samples from. They're interchangeable on the 5.7 WK.

Here's my first and current attempts: http://www.jeepgarage.org/f5/just-finished-my-2nd-cai-7561.html

awesome thanks for the info!! ill look into the other sensor and ill have to congure up something to protect the filter from hotter air.

I feel you still have the weakest part of the stock intake on still. You still have the stock inlet tube with the huge baffle. I would get the airaid jr or the SRT set-up as Coman talked about. You get gains with the smooth tube alone. Im sure it sounds better, but I would guess you are ultimately losing HP like this.
