Only a cabin air filter under the passengers side cowl

If it is a musty type of smell, it very well could be the air conditioning evap core surface - this can get all sorts of funky stuff growing on it.

There are specific products that you can buy for cleaning/deodorizing the evap core, but I have never tried them - hopefully someone else can chime in on a good one to use. They are all under $20 and you usually just spray them into a vent.

You could use this. You can pick it up at autozone.

-Eliminates odors caused by bacteria, mold and mildew in A/C systems
-Special formulation and direct extension tube applicator allows treatment at its source - vents, ductwork, evaporator core and drain pan area
-Safe for all A/C systems
-Biodegradable, long lasting formula
-8 oz. size

It worked well.
Does not leave a strong chemical smell after use.
Part number OE-1. cost about $11.

A prevention technique to this problem is to turn off the A/C button (not the fan, leave that on) a couple of minutes before you turn the car off, i usually do this 2-3 miles before reaching any destination. This prevents the moisture buildup on the coils due when the car is switched off and they are cold. The buildup of moisture promotes bacteria/germs/fungus which produces that bad smell you refer to . I have been doing this since new (4 years ago) and live in a climate that requires A/C 80% of the time (Middle East).

To cure it, there are many A/C flush cans that run for 30 mins in the car which kill the bacteria/germs/fungus that cases the bar smell - similar to the one listed on this thread.
