Drag Coefficient

Anyone have any idea why the Durango wuld have a lower (.35) coefficient of drag (cd) than a GC (.37) ? The nose does not look as sloped.

Re: Drag Coefficient

My guess is its because the front of the Durango is closer to the ground than the GC, and overall the Durango is smoother, and the GC is boxier.

Re: Drag Coefficient

Yep, much lower. One of the reasons I opted for the GC - the Durango's front spoiler doesn't look like it would clear a speedbump.

Re: Drag Coefficient

Note that a lower drag coefficient does not mean less drag per se. The drag coefficient is a function of the body shape. Total drag is proportional to the drag coefficient AND the cross-sectional area. (And the square of the speed btw)

I'd be curious to see how the cross sectional area of the Durango compares to the JGC.

And while I'm pontificating - you'd be surprised how counter-intuitive some aspects of the drag coefficient can be. For example, on sub-sonic rockets and planes, parabolic noses have less drag than ogival and much less than sharp noses.

The other thing that's really important is the tail shape - and there are surprises here too. Ever see people on the freeway who have replaced the tailgate on their pickup with a mesh? Believe it or not, that adds drag (counterintuitive - I know.)

I was about to mention the parabolic aspect also.

in the grand scheme of things it doesnt matter. i mean they already got you to buy it.

Off topic, but why don't you do most everyone a favor and just pick one photo of your ridiculously constantly changing avatar and leave it at that?

I know the other Jeep board is also tired of it.

Otherwise your posts are ok.

Is that really necessary to drag a thread off topic to call someone out like that? If you have a problem, contact an administrator otherwise leave the guy alone.
