WJ Throttle Body [First Post]

I have a 02 Wj 4.7 (non-H/O) with a K&N FIPK, Borla Catback Exhaust, and Superchips tuner. I was wondering if I would benefit from the larger throttle body (maybe around 70mm all the way through). I've seen several options - BBK which has mixed reviews, Fastman which seems to be the cheapest, or possibly Flyin Ryan which I've seen on this forum but know nothing about. Any suggestions as to whether I would benefit from a TB upgrade and/or which one to go with?

Welcome to Jeep Garage.

I have the Fastman TB. Only because he is a short drive away from me. Talking with Dan at Fastman, he said that gains are minimal above 68mm. I noticed a improved throttle response and overall smoothness of the throttle. I have some pictures in my other thread on it (http://www.jeepgarage.org/f196/fastman-throttle-body-39773.html).

I only have the K&N FIPK with it. Looking to do the 3" exhaust and chip further down the road.

In theory it would improve air flow into the manifold as its wider and reduces the delay when the TB plate opens. On the stock TB the plate moves a bit before it clears the lip. On a bored out one it does not have that restriction. I don't have numbers to back anything up. I would definitely make the purchase again.

If you give me a few days, I can let you know some more. I've got a 70 coming from FlyinRyan as we speak

yea please let me know how it goes. Also if you don't mind me asking how much you paid for it? (I would ask Flyin Ryan but i don't have the requisite 5 posts to PM an admin  )

Mine was a special deal due to some cosmetic issues with the one I was buying, so what I paid may not be accurate for a perfect one. You can go on his page though...he's in the vendors section. I think he has some listed with prices.

Welcome to the forum.

As described above, I have a vendor subforum.

Not to discredit Fastman- he's a good guy, makes a good product- but I don't subscribe to the "68mm limit" theory that has been passed around as fact for years. I doubt Bruce at F&B would have wasted his time and money making 70 & 72mm TB's out of billet stock.

My usual porting incorporates the stock 68mm blade, but I open up the inlet significantly over, say, a 68mm striaght bore. No problems and the difference is something people report back as pretty significant.

Better yet, I have had users try a standard ported TB from me, then send it back to be upgraded to a "Beyond Ported" TB (BPTB for short), boring it to 70mm and notice further improvement.

Here's some other food for thought....The STOCK TB's for the 2008+ 4.7 and the new 3.6 Pentastar are both 74mm....and in case you're wondering, yes, even the Pentastar gains from porting. ;)

I also saw gains from a 71mm bored TB on my own personal WJ, and then some more with inlet porting.

So in conclusion, it's not necessary, but not useless either to go bigger than 70mm. Bigger is better, within reason.

I am moving next week so I am not doing any porting until further notice, I can get you a 70mm bored unit but it will be several weeks before I have any more made.

Okay thanks for the heads up. My initial reaction when I saw that about the 68mm bore was the same thinking as you: even if gains are minimal, why NOT go bigger? Is there any disadvantage to a 70/71 mm bore? Also, can you tell me a little bit more about the Beyond Ported TB's you sell? How is the blended inlet an advantage (and what exactly does that mean? - sorry noob here) Thanks FlyinRyan
