Pre-Wired for Towing?

Hi all,
I have a 2011 WK2, Limited, 3.6L...no tow package. I plan on installing a hidden hitch and can't find the pre-wiring in the rear bumper. Am I missing something or does mine just not have it? I can't find any information on why some vehicles have it or don't.

2nd question...assuming that I don't have this pre-wired, should it at least have connections for a brake controller? I plan on being able to wire up to a 7 pin connector. I am thinking of running a 4 pin that piggybacks off of the rear lights and then convert that to a 7 pin that pulls the 12 VDC, brake controller, and back up lights.

Can anyone give me some pointers?

Thanks!

Hi djzim23,
Please take a look at the following two posts that describes both a OEM hitch install as well as a aftermarket option:
http://www.jeepgarage.org/f156/how-to-oem-hitch-install-23196.html
http://www.jeepgarage.org/f156/wk2-hitch-install-23385.html
Hope this helps.
Thanks,
Ricardo

My 2011 3.6L was pre-wired, though the dealer tried to sell me the harness along with the hitch hardware!

I had to make him go out and crawl under the Jeep to confirm I did NOT need it.

Re: Pre-Wired for Towing?

djzim, I was in the same boat as you. My Jeep was NOT prewired.

I opted to go with the OEM hitch because to me, once it's installed, it looks a ton cleaner than any other options. Yes, the lower bumper must be cut to use the OEM hitch. We ran the new harness from the TIPM (engine bay) to the connector which is installed adjacent to the hitch. Per Mopar instructions, the light blue wire for brake control was to be secured behind the glove box...which obviously we took a different route for install.

For the brake controller, Jeep offers a brake controller integration harness that saves a lil bit of wire splicing and definately makes the install go quite smooth with minimal knuckle skin sacrifice.

With the OEM harness and as other have stated, this MUST BE ACTIVATED VIA STARSCAN. In the end, it would have costed ~300ish parts/labor as other have mentioned, but I had this included in the purchase of the new ride.

Re: Pre-Wired for Towing?

I installed a Draw-tite hitch today. My 2012 had no pre-wire.

The wiring kit install was a piece of cake. I was done in no time.

The hardest part was removing the existing bolts from the Rear Tow Hook. Breaker-bar from Home-depot solved that problem.

I'm totally happy with the non-OEM hitch.

Re: Pre-Wired for Towing?

Since my JGC is not pre-wired, what do I have to do to allow for the use of a brake controller? Is it possible that is wired?

Parts I used:

1 118425 T-one Wiring Harness Grand Cherokee
1 Draw-tite Class III Max-frame Trailer Hitch Receiver
1 Bracket,4-pole
1 Tubecover 2 Hidden Hitch - Rubber

My understanding is that all except for the very base (non-E) 2012 Laredo are pre-wired for the factory hitch and plug. The wiring comes through the cargo floor on the driver's side just above where the factory plugs would be located on the OEM hitch, and is zip-tied in place (the wiring has a corregated plastic covering) and has a cover over the plug end to protect it. There are several photos of this in the forums. Here is a photo of how the pre-wiring comes from the factory (copied from one of the other posts). I believe it is tied off to the rear tow hook bracket on some models (if equipped - hook has to be removed to install the OEM factory hitch assembly) or the bumper bracket on others. Best luck.

Re: Pre-Wired for Towing?

Mine is a 2011 (early build) WK2 Limited 2WD. Factory interface wasn't anywhere to be found. Had to completely run a new harness from TIPM to hitch. Wasn't a hard job to do by any means. Kinda stinks that the new harness was to be run along the passenger side frame/body rails per OE install instructions. Not much protection under there so we chose to make a few small re-routing modifications.

I just bought mine about a week ago and it has the wiring installed per your photo. Where do I buy the connector?

Re: Pre-Wired for Towing?

You can get just the connector from your dealer. Don't let them sell you the entire wiring kit (that runs around $100, but does come with the plug you need for a high price). You only need the connector that plug into the end of the pre-wire after you remove the cap on the end. The plug alone is about $45. Best luck.
