Scary Jeep Moment

Today I had a very scary moment in the Jeep. I was on a portion of highway just outside of Hartford, and went to the the left lane in preparation of taking a left hand exit off the highway. I proceed to begin passing a tandem tractor trailer, and then notice a beat up pick up truck ahead. To give you an idea of what i mean by "beat up", it had under-inflated tires, bed was open with things rolling around, broken side view mirrors, dents, and two ladders laying on top of racks. I was shocked at that time that nothing was flying out of it. I am boxed in, pick up truck in front of me, and I am right between trailers of the tandem next to me. Not a very comfortable space, but I had a few car lengths in front of me to the pickup. The highway then takes a curve and the pick up truck does not stay in his lane. The Tractor trailer hits its brakes hard to avoid a collision, and the tandem trailers are in my lane. I swerve over into the breakdown lane to avoid a collision with the tractor trailer, and then the pick up in front of me swerves back into the left lane. Then the inevitable: one of the 12 foot ladders on the pickup truck goes airborne, flying right at my windshield. I hit my brakes hard, nearly getting clipped by the car behind me, the ladder lands a few feet in front of my car, and my jeep runs over the ladder at 50 miles per hour. Just as quickly as it all started, no collision was caused and miraculously i didn't get into an accident running over the ladder. I proceed to follow this beat up pickup truck, assuming they'd stop. I follow to the next exit, with a red light at the end, get out of my car to survey damage and approach the other driver, and they run. In the end, i report the license plate to state police, and my car is seemingly undamaged. Nothing wrong with the tires, no undercarriage damage, an absolute miracle. Can you believe this!?

You lucked out! A year ago i had a similar situation with a beat up truck. He had a bbq grille in the bed and all of a sudden it fell out and i nailed it at 65mph.

Years ago I worked construction jobs up in central Mass and in our crew we had this kid from CT who was the most unbelievable redneck that I have ever met. His antics were to the point of shocking, even to the boys we had from Southie (South Boston Irish- if you've seen Good Will Hunting you'd know the types).

We were all working at a college campus, all staying at the same hotel and one night he goes over to the campus pond and grabs a duck, rings it's neck, guts and feathers it and cooks it on a hot plate.

I'm wondering if you ran across him, or across his ladder.

Glad you weren't hurt.

Were you on I-84 or I-91?

I drive through hartford a few nights a week to go play hockey in glastonbury.
So many nights i've seen stuff fly out of trucks, people just swerve everywhere for no reason, one night coming home i saw a guy hit the center cement median. Nobody was even around, just drove right into it and kept going.

One night though, i was on I-691 up near meriden, guy lost a mattress off his roof, long story short, my at the time Nissan Xterra, ran over that thing like a champ, i was expecting to flip it and crash. I had nowhere to go. Its scary as hell when something like that happens.

I definitely have to play the lotto now, lol. I was on I-84 heading into Hartford in the eastbound direction. I wasn't quite at the interchange, but the 84/91 interchange in Hartford is TERRIBLE! I'm still shocked that I didn't lose control after running over the ladder, the jeep truly did a great job holding its ground.

I worked for CT DOT for exactly one year, back in the mid 80's. They hired a whole slew of us about a year after a section of the Minaus River Bridge fell 70' into the water, killing three.

Is that pier in the middle of three lanes still there on I91 North Bound at the I84 interchange? That made the cover of a trade journal for transportation infrastructure as one of the most dangerous roads in America.

One day the we got an emergency call to get a crew up to the I91 bridge over the CT River. A trooper was parked in the center lane to protect a 2' wide hole that had opened up in the deck.

One Friday afternoon about 4:30 a tractor trailer hauling a load of 2x4's flipped at the upper level of the 84-91 interchange, spilling its payload across most of the I-84 lanes and then down onto I91 below. The entire State was gridlocked until nearly midnight.

I used to visit my girl in downstate NY on the weekends and drive back to Hartford on Sunday nights. It was not unusual to experience a traffic jam on I84 north through Hartford, and on some nights the slow-down would begin within 5 miles of crossing out of New York State.

When she lived in central Massachusetts, I would leave Hartford at 5pm and be in constant bumper-to-bumper all the way up I91 until 2 miles from the state line. Then I'd cruise through Springfield unabated.

Awesome management skills, this CT government had. Good times.
