adding OEM HID's to 2011+ Grand Cherokee/Durango

ok guys...this mod is underway...so lets discuss and try to work this out. I ordered a brand new set of black housing Durango oem HID's from Alpha auto in GB, Wi for VERY CHEAP! They should be here by atleast Friday! I also ordered a set of H11 HID relay harnesses. I know from previous experience on my WK Grand Cherokee that I can use an HID relay harness to fire the ballasts.....BUT...my conundrum is this:

Where does the harness plug into the Durango/Grand Cherokee lamp? Is it hidden in the pic? Can SOMEONE show me a pic of the harness or where it plugs into the lamps?

OK....this should be easy! Just found some pics of grand cherokee hid lamps. You can see where the harness plugs into the lamp. I have circled each in red. Looks like I can unscrew the passenger side and pull the plug on the drivers side to access the wiring for the ballasts. Easy peasey FOLKS! Look for this to be done soon!

If you don't mind me asking, how much is "very cheap"? PM if you prefer...

I paid $700 for the set, new and shipped/ins. They are $599 each new. I see plenty of wk2 lamps on ebay though....or car-part.com

Very interested in the outcome here, as I was hoping to add HID's on the Altitude I have on order. That was one of my big reservations before ordering since there is no way to get an Altitude pkg and HID's. Dealer thinks they can add them, but I'd be their first test mule.
I'd be surprised if it couldn't be done, just depends on how deep you have to go and whether or not you need a software reflash.

Since I've been dismissed by the dealer for wanting to attempt this with an OEM wiring harness, I've snipped the necessary connectors from the harness with some extra wire to spare.

I'm using a wiring harness I bought from www.theretrofitsource.com and tested it last night for each headlamp. The LH lamp has three connections, one for the low-beam, one to trigger the bi-xenon solenoid for high beam, and the ground. The RH lamp has several more connections - I've found the ground and power for the low-beam, but i still have to locate the power for the solenoid.

I'm still working on how to use the bi-xenon part of the lamp and integrate it with the wiring harness I will use. I'll try to get some pictures of everything I'm using. I realize that most people will have to open up the ports on the headlamps themselves, but it should help give an idea of what to look for.

Im confused...but doesnt the jeep use a halogen bulb for the high beam?

The WK2's with halogen housings use a 9005 bulb for the high beam positions

The bi-xenon housing use the HID capsule for the low and high beam function.

If you are going to work on this retro we have one obstacle to overcome. what to do with the high beam/flash to pass bulb.

The bixenon housing uses a 3157 bulb in the position that halogen housings uses for high beam.

So if you can use the bulb collar from the halogen housing (which looks like it attached to the housing with three screws) and transfer it to the bixenon housing then you don't have to worry about your high beam flash to pass part of the retrofit.

And then you can always find the jumper for the solenoid and have the functioning as well.

ahhh...I see! The durango doesnt have that....you can see in the very first pic I posted. Thats a durango HID headlight. It has a 9005 bulb in the high beam location. I would say you are correct though and you can switch the bulb collars from each Jeep housing.

Scott you are going to have much easier time....

Scottina06 04-30-2012 01:16 PM

Yep.....I just need to get the power and ground for the ballast and it will be the same as the 08-10 lights I did.
