Loosing Coolant

Hi all
My Diesel GC is now using approximately 1Lt of coolant per week now,it's been 6 weeks since the service department checked it and found a broken theromstat gasket and they are unable to tell me when the part to fix it will be available ,they gave me some additional coolant and told me not to go to far without water. Along with the clanking and banging from the rear shocks (which Jeep say is normal) the ownership of my first Jeep is becoming a disapointment. I love the car but after sales service stinks, but I suspect they are no worse then the others, is just a shame.

You're kidding aren't you?
  • They know the problem
  • They can't scratch around for a genuine gasket
  • They provide you with surplus coolant
  • They tell you not to stray too far away from a water supply
Baxter, I'd be thumping my fist on a service counter demanding to speak to a manager. If that get's you nowhere, get on to Jeep. You're being shafted!

It's a brand new car requiring a $5 gasket to stop a leak that could cost you / them a new engine!

Which Brisbane dealer / service centre did you go to? I initially called Leo Muller at Holland Park to get a service quote and got a uninterested knucklehead reading the price list to me. I later called Salters at Moorooka who were far more professional.

I you have just bought a 10 year old used car I could understand their apathy but not with a new car. I really think Jeep need to smarten their dealerships / service depts up. You'd think they'd be falling over themselves trying to keep you happy in the hope you'd recommend a Jeep to family and friends making a dent in Toyota's stranglehold in the Australian market!

Tend to agree with Aussie. That is bad. They could airmail a gasket in a matter of a few days.
Telling you what they did is outrageous. Who is the dealer?

I do not understand why when they order in parts it takes 6 weeks, however that is their standard answer. Previously I have ordered items from "JustforJeeps" for our grand cherokee and they were here in 10 days.

You would think that an item like a thermostat gasket, and also considering how potentially serious that is (lucky it is not Summer), could be put in an airmail envelope and you would have it circa 3 - 4 days.

Find a new service department. Im guessing the above advice will sort you out if not I've heard the gc is good and I'm happy with Toowoomba thus far.

Theres a mention on another forum about a Brizzy service centre that overcharged this guy on a service on his new JGC, fixed a loose bumper with a zip tie and charged him $50 when it should have been fixed for free under warranty with proper fasteners, then did'nt stamp the service book and didnt reset the oil service message.

I'm trying to keep calm on this issue as my servive department is only getting their info from head office. The thing that annoys me most is they tell lies, six weeks ago they told me 1-2 weeks ETA but now they say they have no idea until Chrysler tells them.On four occasions they said they would ring back by the end of the day with and ETA but only called back once (the last time) to tell me they have no idea. How hard can it be , in my job I can get parts from Austria in 10 working days (the gasket has to come from Germany)and I just got some parts for the Jeep from the USA in three weeks.
Yes they gave me 1L of concentrated coolant at the last visit ( they topped it up at the workshop twice), however the coolant they gave me is yellow and the coolant in my Jeep is pink so I have been using deminerised water only (i've been told not to mix coolants)
They told me if I need to travel long distance they would try and get a replacement car but this needs to be approved by Chyrsler but should be fine around town if I keep and eye on the level at top it up as required.

You have more patience than me.

this is how your issue should have been treated. http://jeepgarage.org/showthread.php?t=33850

Good luck with it I hope it gets rectified soon.

Re: Loosing Coolant

Basically, Jeep need to keep spares on hand for the cars they sell.
If it were me, I would be calling Chrysler Aust Customer Service, demanding an explanation.
If you are not satisfied, and somehow I don't think you will be, I would contact the Dept of Fair Trading and lodge a complaint.
There is no excuse for them not to have such a basic part in stock. Even if they ran out of them, they could easily airfreight one over within a few days.

Hey Glenn

Does the other forum mention which Brisbane service centre this was? No point us Brizzyites giving business to a rogue Jeep operator! Not to mention the potential damage we can avert by not using them.

Re: Loosing Coolant

Cant they use a silicone gasket compound until the replacement comes in? Any competent mechanic can stop a broken cooling system gasket with some Permatex / Loctite / Silastic as a good temporary repair.

Re: Loosing Coolant

Just back from visiting my Brisbane Service Centre and the latest is that they ordered the part on the 30th March from Chrysler Australia and Chrysler then placed an order on Germany, however it now turns out that Germany no longer supply spare parts and they now think the part will come from the USA but not sure and not sure when. They said they will call back today (yeh right) with an ETA so continue to top up coolant as required.
