Best Bike Rack?

Hey all,

I'm looking into buying a new four bike rack for my hitch and didn't know if anyone on here had some suggestions. The Yakima doubledown is currently my top choice ($210) but there is also an Allen rack for about 1/4 of the price ($80) that has gotten decent reviews on Amazon. Also don't know much about Thule racks if anyone has experience with them and like to enlighten me :)

Essentially, I am looking for a good weekend rack that will hold 3-4 bikes and not induce a fear of the rack braking if driving over 50 miles on a highway, which some cheaper ones seem to have a history of. Thanks!

I still use my old Yakima Slic Roc 4 bike carrier. It's solid and not one issue. I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for. Maybe check your local craigslist to find a used one.

Re: Best Bike Rack?

I recently purchased the Thule 9027 Apex Swing 4 Bike for my JGC. It is a four bike, hitch mounted swing away carrier. It has been fantastic. Fully loaded the unit can swing out and around to the side so you can open tailgate and get to things with no obstructions. The antisway cages keep the bikes from moving and the hitch tensioning knob keeps the hitch really tight in the receiver so no bouncing around when you are travelling. The other cool feature was the integrated locking cable that locks the bikes to the receiver.

It's pricey, but as someone else said, you get what you pay for. I got mine at RackOutfitters, they were the best price at the time (about a month ago).

I have the Yakima Doubledown and it is very solid - no wobble at all. You can pull a pin and access the gate easily, unless there are bikes mounted. I can still get in there with 2 bikes and still put the rack back in place but you might have trouble with 4.

The one thing I do not like about it, and this is purely my take, is that the hitch pin is a bolt. If you tighten the bolt it removes all the play in the rack, which is a great feature and works as intended. The problem is that I only mount the rack when I want to carry 2 bikes, which is only on weekends and not even every weekend. If I am going for a solo ride the bike just goes in the back. So I want to be able to install and remove the rack quickly - preferably without tools. The Doubledown fails at this since you have to thread the hitch pin all the way in and out again.

Awesome! Thanks so much for the infor, Moosehead. Im not sure why that didnt come up when I did my search.

Brandont, That is definitely a valid point since I would be using this only on the weekends as well and would prefer ease of use in getting it on and off. Since I am 6'6" my bike is a bit too big too fit in the back without serious finagling.

Anyone else have opinions they'd like to voice...especially if you have an Allen Delux 4 bike rack which has the best ratings on Amazon, mostly due to the $89.00 price.

Thanks again :)

I too purchased the Thule 9027 Apex Swing. I've driven with 4 bikes about 50 miles at 75mph with no issues. The more bikes on the more it moves but its a very solid bike rack. The anti sway attachments are great and the ability to move it to the side without taking any bikes off to open the tailgate has been nice.

Its held in by twisting a knob (built in lock) that expands a piece that sits in the hitch along with a pull release pin. I normally just leave it on the back of the jeep when not in use but can release and take it off in a couple minutes.

This is exactly what I want, except about $250 over my budget :( I guess I should have prefaced that I was not looking to spend more than $200-250 since I will only be using it on occasional weekends. I am lucky to have one of the largest bike paths in the DC area about 300 yards from my house, so spending $400 on a rack that I will use less than the Army Reserves of the 90's (aka one weekend a month).

I have the Kuat Sherpa. Holds two bikes. I can install the rack in seconds. The same goes for the bikes. Really a nice piece of equipment. Lightweight and aluminum. Here are some pics.

It can tilt out of the way to allow access to the rear of the vehicle. I wasn't going to spend this much on a rack, but after looking at the others, I really liked this.

Anyone have experience with the Thule 954, http://www.amazon.com/Thule-954-Ridg...6064697&sr=8-1

One was just posted on craigslist for $150 and not sure if I should scoop it up or hold out and save for a platform rack like the Kuat Sherpa or Thule Doubletrack, as posted above. Thanks!!
