Can E85 be substituted for M85
 
Can E85 be substituted for M85 in the Pentastar?

It's already set-up to run on E85, so would it run on a methanol mixture? Will the ECU program itself to run on a a fuel with a low BTU per gallon like that? Will it cause any other problems?

I'm sure it can be done but it would probably require some tuning.

I'm not so sure your fuel system would survive as it is a bit more aggressive vs ethanol.

Methanol is severly harmful to life.
1/2 teaspoon usually causes blindness and 4oz of it ingested is fatal. Do not get it on you or breathe it.

Why do you want to do this?

Just wondering aloud is this a possible future alternative to E85.

I've known for a long time that the US is the "Saudi Arabia of natural gas". Recently I read that methanol can be manufactured from natural gas at a cost of about $1.30/ gallon. Since it has about half of the BTUs as gasoline, and factoring in supply issues, it is estimated that a market equivalent would be about $3.00 per gasoline gallon.

I'm sure it "could" be done as Meth and Eth have rougly the same BTU's.

The MPG would decrease as it has less energy per unit vs gasoline, but this happens with Eth also.

I'm sure a scrubber could filter out the exhaust problems.

The only thing I could argue against using it as a future fuel is it's lethal nature. Accidentally pour gas on yourself and you stink, same with Eth...Pour Meth on yourself and you have a life or death issue.

Instead of processing the NG to make Meth why not just use the NG? Much easier and safer.

It takes 2 gallons of methanol to equal a gallon of gas but only 1.5 gallons of ethanol. So I'm guessing that a conversion would simply involve resetting a variable in the engine computer. Since I don't know much about the computer control systems on flex-fuel engines that's all I'm doing here is guessing.

Natural gas is an excellent fuel although the conversion is a lot more extensive. On-board fuel storage and delivery are both completely different.

The worldwide delivery system for liquid fuels is already in place and adaptation to alcohol fuels is already occurring with E85. There's still not enough stations in my area, probably due to supply issues. Ethanol is made from corn in a very inefficient process and that's corn that would otherwise be available for food. That's why the cost of meat has risen so much in the last ten years.

Natural gas, in contrast, is plentiful due to recent advancements in extraction techniques. The cost has dropped. It's a waste product in many industries and if cost-effective collection and conversion processes were available most of that waste would be available as liquid fuel instead of the current practice of flaring it off or venting to the atmosphere.

Both gasoline and methanol are extremely toxic. Their pathways are a bit different but I don't suggest taking a bath or making a cocktail from either.
