Ticking noise at start up/idle.

For the past two weeks or so my mother's 04 4.7 has been making a ticking noise once it starts up and has progressively gotten louder. Although once it has been idling for a while the ticking is still there but it is a lot less quieter than when it starts up. Does anybody have an idea on what the problem might be?

Can be a hydraulic valve lash adjuster when the noise comes from the head. But first you have to find out where exactly the noise seems to be coming from. A mechanics stetoscope could help a lot finding the source.

yeah it could be lifters, cracked exhaust manifold, loose exhaust manifold, missing bolt in the exhaust manifold, etc... there is a laundry list of things that could cause ticking.

Both great suggestions, This is a great guess.

If it helps, I can hear the noise more from the bottom of the car than when I open the hood and try to locate the ticking.

I will be going to the dealer on Thursday to have them check it out. If in fact it is the exhaust manifold any ideas on how much it would cost to replace?

from a dealer way more than its worth. it may only being the manifold gasket but at any rate it would be cheaper to buy a used one from the junk yard and install it yourself or have a local mechanic do it. my guess it might be around 2-300 for the latter option.

I am currently having this problem fixed in my 2006 4.7L V8. They had to replace my entire exhaust manifold, due to an exhaust leak etc. It was pretty corroded. Sounds like it's going to cost between $500-$600.

I have an 04 6 cylinder. My similar ticking came from the inside of one of the cat converters on the first pipe just off the manifold. "Front Y Pipe".
