So I left my car running today for 4 hours.

I have a 2011 wk2 with a push to start system. Today on my lunch break I was running late so as soon as I pulled up to my parking spot I guess I must have walked out of the car without pushing the button. 4 hours later one of my friends tells me that my lights are on and when I go outside to turn them off I find the car running and with the AC on !!!. Since I had the keys in my pocket and was so far away from the car shouldn't the car have shut off by itself after a certain amount of time? I did notice that "key too far away" warning was displayed on my EVC but the car was still running. To say the least I was quite pissed off at myself. This was a stupid and expensive mistake. I must do a better job at remembering to push the button. I guess I'm not used to having such a commodity.

Agree, coming from older generation Jeeps, push button start is new.

There is a whole new set of habits to develop.

I've left the Jeep running more than once, but realized quickly enough and shut it down.

My worst blunder was rolling into a parking space in a lot, pressing the start button, opening the door, stepping out only to realize the Jeep is still in DRIVE and the engine still running. D'oh! I quickly jumped back in and onto the brake before rolling into the car parked in the space in front of me. My excuse - the Jeep runs so quietly, I thought I had turned it off... ;)

Why can the Jeep protect me from myself in such an instance! ;)

Habit??, Didn't you take your keys with you in your older car???
If you push start your car with the remote it will shut down in 20 minutes. IF you did not know.

About a year of so ago, I saw a lady do this in WK2 in parking lot one time. She thought she put the car in P but actually put in R and got out. The car started going backwards, and drivers door was still open and started pushing her backwards. She was screaming because she didn't know what to do. I happened to be right there I pushed her out of the way and jumped in to stop the Jeep. She had two young kids in the backseat and blamed them for distracting her.

You should have let Darwin work his magic...people are so stupid these days (not you, the woman driver).

This isnt remote start though, its just the push to start button inside the car. My model doesnt have the remote start feature.

I did have they keys in my pocket which based on my old habits made me think the car wasnt running.

They probably couldn't do it that way for safety reasons. Let's say the key was somehow thrown from the vehicle while you were driving down the road. Slim chance, I know, but the lawyers have to plan for everything. It's not like the key is stuck securely in the ignition; it could be anywhere inside. Having the truck shut itself off after 20 minutes would present an obvious safety risk. Or what if you got the infamous "Key Not Detected" message while you were driving down the road and the truck suddenly shut itself off? Or what if someone dropped the truck off to you, left it running while you switched vehicles, then accidentally took off with the key still in their pocket? You'd be stranded. It would be nice, however, if there was an audible chime. My wife's Maxima will make a beeping noise outside the car if you leave it running and take the keys with you, but it still won't shut itself off.

Well put LOL!

I am honestly very happy I saw this thread guys, I now know it may be a honor to park next to a beautiful WK2 in a parking lot but it may also be a hazard... I think I stick to parking next to the WK's lol

My WK2 will not shut off if not in park. If you push the button whilst in drive an EVIC MSG will appear saying vehicle not in park.
