How do I check the alternator to see if its charging the battery?
Re: battery charging
If there is no voltmeter on the dash, you need to use an external voltmeter. Measure the voltage on the battery poles with the engine off, This should be around 12,6 V on a charged battery. Then start the engine and check again, the voltage should be now 13,5-14,5 V. When it is significantly lower, you could have a problem with the alternator or regulator.
If you don't have a volt- or multimeter, just switch on the headlights with the engine off and see if they become brighter when the engine is on, which is a sign that the alternator is charging.
