Spare tire question

For everyone running oversized tires, what do you guys do for a spare? I have an 05 with a hitch and wanting to get bigger tires, preferably 255/70/17s or 265/70/17s, however I need to have one for the spare. I am not going to cut the bolts for the spare. Therefore I think I'm stuck getting either getting 245/70/17s or 245/65/17s. Just curious to what most people do for a spare tire? Also, does anyone know what max tire size can fit my WK spare? Thanks in advance.

Re: Spare tire question

A lot of people throw their oversize tiries under he car in he normal spot. Look at omelets build thread.

The 255/70 & 265/70 fit under the Jeep with some modification to the factory hitch setup.

I saw the thread, I will not be doing the hitch modification. Therefore, what is the max tire size that will fit in the spare?

Re: Spare tire question

You can probably deflate the tire to get a bigger one to fit in that space.

Why not? If you don't have the tools I'm sure someone near by would help you. It would be a shame to not go with bigger tires simply because you can't fit the spare under your ride.

Get under there and find out. Simply measure the clearance you have now with your stock spare. Then find out how much bigger your desired tires are and calculate whether they'd fit or not.

You could also store the spare in the cargo area, or on the roof. People do it all the time. XJ and ZJ spares are stored vertically in the cargo area.

Slightly different subject, but i plan on going up to 31" tires on my WK. Do I have to get a 5th tire for my spare or is not 100% necessary? I do not do extreme offroading, only light beach cruising and some suburban offroading.
