2002-03 JGC Limited

Hi All,
Iam looking at two grand cherokee's. One has 59,000 and the inline 6,
the other one has 90,000 and the 4.7 in it. The pricing on the two is very close both are less than 9,000.00. which one do you all think my run longer, the 6 or the 8. Both motors have been well maintained.
Thanks for the feed back.

The 4.0 properly maintained will usually outlast the vehicle it lives in. The 4.7 runs light years better, gets better gas mileage but will it outlast a 4.0? Who knows.

Also, you have to worry about the 42RE transmission that comes with the 4.0. My old 93 4.0 was stil running strong at 208,000 miles, but the the transmission ground itself into bits and pieces. My 4.7 is running great at 143,000 miles, and the 45rfe transmission is much stronger, but there aren't as many 4.7s out there with high mileage to have as definite an answer about longevity compared to the 4.0. That said, any modern well maintained engine "should" run over 200k no problem.

4.0 will outlast the 4.7, it's a tried, true, and proven engine. It's one of the very few die hard engines still around out there. The 4.7 won't last as long, but it will last quite a while and it runs better and it gets better gas mileage.

I would choose the 4.7L. More power, same or slightly better fuel economy, more modern 5-speed electronic transmission.

After owning both... I liked that some maintenance was simpler on the I6 (plus cheaper with 2 less cylinders) but I really like the extra power of the V8 to lug around an already heavy vehicle, plus this transmission seems pretty strong overall. Hell, its the same one they put on WKs with the 5.7L hemi. And the mileage is the same or better with the V8, so why not? :D

I've had both too...the 4.0 in a Wrangler and an XJ, and I've got the V8 in my WJ. I loved the 4.0, but I would never go back if I had the option to go with the 4.7 instead. So much more "driveable" for the same fuel economy or better....
