Summit Steering Wheel

This weekend I took factory delivery of a 2012 Grand Cherokee Overland Summit and I'm a little disappointed the top of the steering wheel feels like a hollow plastic tube. If I tap on it with my finger nails, it sounds like PVC plastic too. There is no visiable wood grain in the material like on the dash, it's just solid black. I thought the top of the steering wheel was suppose to be wood. When I asked the dealer about it, the response I got was the lacquer coating makes it sound this way.... Granted I factory ordered a Summit sight-unseen but the Overlands at the dealership with the burl wood finish on the steering wheels felt solid. Is this typical of the Summit steering wheels?

The Summit I test drove before buying my Overland felt exactly the same as the wheel on my Overland. It was stiff and firm, just like my Overland's. Not really too sure what would cause that, maybe a different supplier?

The Overland has a light finish on the wood wheel, and matches the dash inlays. The Summit has a dark smoked finish on both; very dark. Perhaps too dark for your taste as it tends to hide the wood grain.

These are high-build finishes with a glassy surface, and they tend to feel like plastic.

Mine is exactly the same. Mine does not bother me though. I think the Black finished wood looks much better than the wood colored trim and wheel. It smelled funny for a few weeks like benzine or chemichal while I was using the heated steering wheel but it started to go away before i stopped using it do to warmer weather.

I noticed the tapping sound is alot better when I cut my nails.... :o

And I started extending my driving fingers and tapping the underside of the gauge shroud ( dashboard ) and like the sound better...

True Story :)

Thank for all the replies... this was my first post on Jeep Garage and I love it! Anyway, the 2002 Overland I traded for the 2012 Summit had a very solid steering wheel. I guess if I trim my nails it wouldn't bother me as much!

Re: Summit Steering Wheel

I have taken apart two Summit steering wheels and I can confirm that the top of the rim is wood and the wood is white but stained with some sort of translucent stain tinted stain.

I think they over stain them as wood tend to fade as it get exposed to the some. I do see my woodgrain in direct light but from some angle it does look all black.

There is a heating element running through the wood some it may have been burning the wood a bit.
