Overtorqued spacers
 
I just had wheel spacers put on as well as a new right front hub assembly. On the way down to a friends wedding in VA beach I heard a slight clunking sound in the front left tire. At first, I though I needed a new left hub assembly, or maybe something was loose with the bilstein's that i just put on.

On the way back home, the clunking turned into grinding and the steering wheel shook. My wife and I couldn't take it anymore and decided to stop somewhere to get it checked out. We luckily found an NTB tire place in MD (we were still 4 hrs from home).

As soon as they put in on the lift, my left tire was wobbling. Turns out...2 lug bolts snapped in half and the other 3 where barely on. It was just a matter of time till my front tire was going to fall right off.

All of this on Sunday, Mother's day with my pregnant wife trying to get home to pick up our daughter from the in-laws. I can't imagine what would happen to me or anyone else in on the interstate if that tire fell off.

Anyone running spacers...make sure they are torqued correctly.

That happened to me with my stock tires. Apparently I didn't tighten the rims enough and over time the bolts got loose and allowed the rim to wobble. One bolt with stud snapped completely off and when I eventually pulled over I was able to hand turn the other in tact bolts by hand. The stud was the only thing that had to be replaced. Pretty scary since I was going 75 mpg and I had exactly the same grinding noise you had.

That's why no matter where it was serviced after it came home I would jack the car up and set my torque wrench to the correct pressure and check them one by one. If they shop ever needed to take them off I would give them the torque specs so they can set it. I always handed them loc-tite as well.

I had the same thing happen on my Grand Marquis when I had a set of tires put on at the local Goodyear tire store. I usually take all the tires in and install myself. I got lazy and it cost me a few lugs because the tech didn't torque them. Just spun them on as tight as he could get them.

It was probably not an overtorque situation, you would be supprised my 1/2" impact is/was top of the line when I got it 3-4 years ago, and shortly after I got it I was one of the few that could break a stud (if a lug was seized onto the stud, best way to get it off is to have at it till it breaks then replace the stud). That said even with my gun it takes 10 seconds of all shes got to break the stud, there is not a single person I know that does anything mechanical for a living that has a gun powerful enough to do that that is dumb enough to run any lug nut in like that.

The story clearly stated there was some noise, AKA the wheel was likely wobbling. wobbling wheel with large heavy M/T (hell even stock wheels) = broken studs.

x2 yep mine was wobbling and the stud was broken.
