Looking at a few 4.0L WJs
Hey all;
After deciding not to go with a WK, I've been looking into a WJ. I have heard both good and bad with Grand Cherokees of this year. So any advice from the experts here?

I'm looking at a lifted 2004 with 121k miles; 4.0L Inline 6

I really dont want to end up with another lemon. My Explorer that I'm trying to sell is a piece of crap... I want something thats reliable, so any advice that you have to give me is welcome! :)

Hello. I am an owner of an '04 WJ with the I6 engine. If you want to tow anything look for a good 4.7.
I like my WJ fine have no problems so far except for replacing my radiator.
Good luck.

Well I went and looked at it in person. Its quite the nice ride, but it does have a few quirks. The owner says its in alignment but the wheel sits to the left, like its out of alignment. It's leaking oil, power steering line has a seep, and the transmission pan gasket needs to be replaced (no big deal as I would normally do a transmission pan drop). I talked the owner down to 6600.

Would you go for it? I have to sell my Ford Explorer first.

I'd say try to get more opinions first while you're selling your Explorer and before you decide to get it. I would, depending on how much it'll cost to fix it up. Oil leak and tranny gasket may be the only major quirks with it and none of it should be too hard to repair. You got some photos of it?

Re: Looking at a few 4.0L WJs
I do have some pictures that the seller provided on his ad.

I'm going to take it to a shop to have the alignment checked. If all isn't too difficult, I'll be able to do all the work myself. From what I've seen underneath, its a very easy vehicle to work on. :D
My current vehicle is completely built and repaired by myself. I know we're talking about jeeps, but here's the ride I'm trying to sell... Not an easy market to sell something like this.

You'll be happier with the Jeep over the Exploder....I've had no issues with mine and absolutely love it. Shoot for an might as well get as new as possible while retaining the solid axles. That was my reasoning. I wanted the solid axles because initially I was going to set it up for mild off-roading. After having had a lifted TJ and a lifted XJ, and spending some time on this site, I decided to go street with the WJ. Regardless, it's been a solid vehicle.

You might want to check out the bolt pattern on your explorer wheels. I know the Explorer and Jeep used to have the same bolt pattern. 8.8" ford is a common swap for Jeep owners. You might be able to use those nice wheels on the GC.

Re: Looking at a few 4.0L WJs
The jeep will definitely be an upgrade over the explorer. The 4.0L is a solid engine and the few problems you listed so far are quite easy to fix. Alignment is easy on these, maybe a shop would give you a discount because only toe is adjustable. If it needs tie rod ends, those are very straight forward to replace. Good luck with whatever you decide!
