iPod Classic 6th gen & 730N RHW (RHR)
Yesterday I bought a brand-new 160 GB iPod Classic (6th gen). My intent is to keep ALL my music library (12000 tracks) available in my truck, instead of dealing with the small hard drive (and the loooong time to copy files on the HD) or with a USB stick that's limited to 32GB (and doesn't provide the search by album or artist...).
My 730N is the EU version, RHW, but it's almost identical to RHR so the info below should apply, too.
I tried connecting the iPod using the stock white USB-dock cable from Apple
That's what happened:
- iPod connected to the front USB port: works well
- iPod connected to the armrest USB port: no connection at all
As - obviously - my intent was to keep the iPod under the armrest, and after other test with USB keys, I was conviced that the armrest port was indeed working, and the problem could possibly be caused by the lenght of the entire connection (from the head unit to the armrest port PLUS from the armrest port to the iPod), probably exceeding USB cable specifications.
So I went to the nearby Apple Store and bought an InCase mini cable kit (EUR 24,55, $ 24,95 on goincase.com), including a 4in USB-dock cable.
And it worked like a charm !!! The really shortest cable also kept more clean the inside of the upper armrest box...
Incase sells also a single 6in USB-dock cable at $ 14.95. I did not test it, I'd prefer to stick with the shortest possible choice, but it's likely it should work too).
Hope this can help anyone with the same trouble...
