Engine Break-In

This has prob been covered but I couldn't find it. Manual says:
Drive moderately during the first 500 miles (800 km).
After the initial 60 miles (100 km), speeds up to 50 or
55 mph (80 or 90 km/h) are desirable.

Are they saying to drive under 50 mph for the first 60 miles?
Thanks

Re: Engine Break-In

There are 2 schools of thought on this:

1. Baby it for the first 500.
2. Drive it just like normal.

In the manual they are saying after the first 60 miles a nice highway trip would do the Jeep good.

I prefer 50 miles of nice driving then drive it like you stole it every once in a while to give it a bit of exercise.

If you find it becoming sluggish after a few days disconnect the battery over night. It erases the adaptives that happen with city/heavy traffic driving. The Jeep will learn to be lazy with to much slow take-offs and city driving.

I did a 500 mile break in before I started to really jump on it.

i did around 1000mile then started to push it to its limits, the car is just fine but still having the rear clunking even after applying the updates other than that its just perfect :)

Re: Engine Break-In

I don't really get gentle break-in periods... Whats the first thing performance engines do after being assembled? Get on a dyno and show what they've got.

Seems to me if you want rings to seat properly you need them to get warm and snuggly with the cylinder walls as soon as possible.

That said... If I were fortunate enough to take ownership of a new 6.4 Jeep, that 500mi break-in period would probably be up before I got home from the dealership;)

unless it's rebuilt rotary engine, break-in is rubbish.
