5.7 vs 6.1

Sorry, I've searched for a few days and can't seem to find definitive answers on my questions.

I'm looking into buying a Jeep Grand Cherokee, and. For the price. I'm trying to understand the advantage of going with the SRT8 over a 5.7.

I realize that it would be easier to go out with an SRT8, but they are almost 2x as much locally, and on paper, it seems that you could make a 5.7 just as powerful with heads/cam swap. This will be my second vehicle, so I'm just looking for something sort of 'budget' that can still be a lot of fun to drive.

What are the drive train differences of the 5.7 and the SRT?
How much power can the 5.7's handle reliably in the 2wd & 4wd models?

Thanks,
Matt

First where are you located?

It all depends on what your going to do with it, and to it, in the 5.7 vs 6.1 debate.

Different gearing in the transmissions. Srt has lower gears but with open diffs, 5.7 has higher gears but has the option of QD2 (locking T-case and front and rear Electronic Limited Slip Diffs).

You can read more on WKJeeps.com

Both transmissions will hold to around 500 for 5.7, 600 for the 6.1. Anymore and you will need a built one. Both built transmissions will hold what ever you do to it (SharaDon Stage 3 for 5.7, Paramount or SHR for 6.1).

For your last question "How much power can the 5.7's handle reliably in the 2wd & 4wd models?"

Are you talking built or stock and it's more about the proper tuning of the engine also. That's what gets people! Tuning is key.

I was talking more about drive train than the engines. Do all of the models run the same rear end/drive shaft?

The 5.7 seems like a very good platform, and frankly, I dont want to go sign a note on 25k+ to get an SRT8. I would love to, but with student loans, rent, and high insurance, that just wouldnt be responsible. haha. So, getting a 5.7 and using extra to get it closer to its big brother is the best fit for me.

I'm from Kansas City. I dont plan on hauling anything with it, maybe a jet ski in a year or 2, but nothing major. I drive a G35 right now, and have had it for a few years, and am ready for a change. The WK jeeps have always been sharp looking to me, and I love the idea of a high horsepower truck/suv. I used to have an 06 Silverado RCSB that was a 13.8 truck, and it was as much fun as my 12 second Cobra.

So, is there any way to make a 5.7 launch like an SRT8? That seems to be the big advantage of it...

If you don't want to do a lot of mods to it get the SRT8

Search the internet and you will find one for a good price.

The rear diff, front diff, T-case, Torque converter, driveshafts, trans gearing is lower, suspension, sways, brakes. A lot of items are different. If you were planning on gutting the powertrain/driveline go with the 5.7. If you only want to do a few mods get the SRT8.
