Mopar Ambient Lighting install w/Pics
Hey Everyone,

Well I decided last week to forgo the awesome DIY ambient foot well lighting kit posted in the other thread and instead opt for the official Mopar version. I ordered the kit from Just for Jeeps (where I order most of my parts) and took advantage of the extra 5% off for being a member here parts came in today and I completed the install in about 2.5 hours (yeah I am slow I know). Here is my write up with Pictures

First off, here is the full kit. It comes with 4 LED light strips (2 for the front and 2 for the back), a wiring harness, a control box, the color switch and some misc stuff like zip ties.

The instructions are pretty spot on. First remove the shifter know, then the trim piece around the shifter.
looking down on the exposed shifter with trip piece removed

Next, using a provided template, I cut a small hole for the wire on the power/color switch. Honestly, I think this can be positioned anywhere and I even thought about putting it inside the center arm rest. But I ultimately decided to leave it exposed. The nice thing is that the switch is extremely flat, it hardly protrudes and the graphic matches the other buttons on the car perfectly.

Next remove the storage bin and pop out the trim around the stereo . The storage bin was held in with 3 screws the larger trip piece just popped out using a trim tool. This basically exposes the entire center stack.

At this point, I used an air can and clean cloth to clean all of the small spaces where dust collected over the year I have owned the jeep :D.

Next came the light strip install. They are narrow long flexible strips with adhesive on the back. Each strip has 4 LEDs on it.

Position one on the metal bar on the back of each seat and route the wires under the carpet up through the exposed center stack.
I realize this is a bit blurry and hard to tell, but this picture is of the underside of the passenger seat with the sight strip affixed to the metal cross bar. it was difficult getting the picture laying on my back upside-down.

Next for the front, remove the driver and passenger silent panels, and install the light strip to each of those, replace and route the cables into the center stack.

Finally, plug the 4 cables into the control box, plug the 12v lighter power into the new power harness, then back into the lighter. Plug the power into the control box, tie up any extra cable and stuff it all into the very back of the center stack.

**I do have one question for the Jeep experts here, the instructions say the following,
NOTE: If MoparŪ Heated Seat Kit is installed, plug
ambient light power harness into previously installed
heated seat power harness and not into the key

switched 12V outlet.
I have an overland with heated seats, but was unable to find any type of heated seat power harness in the center stack so I plugged into the key switched 12v. Any idea where the heated power seat harness is? **

As mentioned in the previous post, the night pictures are hard, but I tried to take a few pictures of the actual strip with a few different colors and one shot of the passenger foot well lighted in blue. There is a light green that is a very very close match to the default lighting in the Overland. There are a bunch of different colors including reds, oranges, pinks, greens, blue, clear and off.

The last picture is a side shot of the switch with everything put back together.

overall not too difficult of a mod, took about 2.5 hours and so far I really like the results.

This is probably a really dumb question, but I assume that the colors only change on the lights you added and the lights that are standard on the GC stay the light green color? When I originally read the brochure that mentions this kit I thought it sounded like the button would change all the colors. From the write up it sounds more like a 3rd party type add on that doesn't integrate with the GC standard lighting.

You are in a sense correct Brandont. It does not tie into the factory light system with the exception that they come on as the rest of the lights due to using the switched key switched 12v power.

I am going to play with it this weekend and see if I tie the power into the lights on the shifter panel, like in the other thread, if that will cause the lights to dim with the rest of the cabin lights.

Only the add on lights change color, the factory lights stay the default green.

I can't believe the price on this's basically $25 worth of LED strips and a fancy button/switch. I did the same thing to my Acura TL and it cost me maybe $30...purchased high end LED strips and placed them under front and rear footwells and added a nice push button swith in the console.

It looks good, but even if the price were equal, I tend to like the single LED DIY vs. the MOPAR aftermarket kit. No point in having additional ambient lighting if it doesn't match the other OEM lights.

Nice install have fun playing with the lights.

I don't think that you will be successful in trying to make them dim with the other interior light because, the module they plug into is what controls the dimming.

If you wire them up directly then maybe....
